In short

Alhambra is its own incorporated city, so LA Sanitation's bulky item program does not apply here at all. Republic Services holds Alhambra's exclusive solid waste and recycling franchise and runs a weekly bulky item sweep instead: six items or fewer go to the curb on your normal collection day with no booking of any kind. The sweep stops where most real clearance jobs start. Construction and demolition debris, tires, paint, garden chemicals and automotive fluids are all refused outright, and every electronic item and appliance has to be scheduled in advance or it is left behind. Los Angeles Junk Removal & Hauling covers that gap, at one flat volume-based price agreed before we start.

Alhambra calls itself the Gateway to the San Gabriel Valley and it is built like one: roughly 7.6 square miles of dense, mostly pre-1990 housing wrapped around two hard-working commercial spines. The City's own Consolidated Plan counts about 32,140 housing units, split 56 per cent single-family and 44 per cent multi-family, with 60 per cent of homes renter-occupied and around 87 per cent of the stock built before 1990.

That mix decides what leaves the property and how. Long-held family houses produce whole-garage and whole-estate loads. Duplexes, triplexes and courtyard apartments produce turnover loads on a landlord's clock. Valley Boulevard produces commercial loads that the residential rules were never written for. See furniture removal, appliance removal and how our pricing works.

The free option first

Six items, no booking.
Everything else is on you.

Use the sweep for what it is good at. Alhambra City Council voted unanimously on 13 March 2023 to reinstate weekly bulky item sweep services with Republic Services, and from 1 April 2023 residents, multi-family dwellings and businesses have been able to put bulky items curbside on their cart service day at no additional cost. For six items or fewer, no advance scheduling is needed. Above six items, the City asks you to email or call Republic first so the volume is planned for. Businesses have to schedule every pickup regardless of quantity. Items must be out by 6am on collection day and must not go out before noon the day before, or Code Enforcement can require you to take them back in.

Chairs, sofas, mattresses, box springs, futons, beds, tables, cabinets and rugs all ride the sweep. Green waste rides it too, but only bundled: tree limbs, palm fronds, wood and carpet have to be tied into bundles no longer than four feet and no more than two feet across, at 50 pounds a bundle. That is a real constraint on a hedge job or a fence tear-out, and it is the point at which most people stop bundling and start calling.

Electronics and appliances are the trap. Televisions, monitors, computers, printers, microwaves, refrigerators, washers, dryers, water heaters and stoves are collected curbside, but only if you have scheduled them with Republic and labeled each item with your address. The City is explicit that unscheduled items will not be picked up and the homeowner is subject to a fine. Anything that may contain refrigerant has to have it removed before curbside collection. And the refusals are absolute: tires, car bodies, construction and demolition debris, paint and thinners, pesticides and weed killers, motor oil, antifreeze and lead-acid batteries are all off the truck and have to go to a household hazardous waste site.

On the ground

Alleys, rear garages
and shared driveways.

Most Alhambra jobs are decided by the back of the property, not the front. Whole blocks north and south of Main Street were laid out with service alleys and rear garages, and Public Works still maintains and rehabilitates those alleys as a numbered capital program. That is usually the shortest route out for a garage load, and the City's own bulky rule points the same way: residents in gated complexes have to put items at the curb or in the alley, because the driver will not go past the gate. We work the alley when the alley is the sensible answer and shuttle to a street-parked truck when it is not.

The housing stock does the rest of the work. Around 3,690 Alhambra homes sit in two-to-four-unit buildings, roughly 11 per cent of the stock, and those small buildings are where turnover loads come from: a unit handed back, a stairwell full of a previous tenant's furniture, a shared garage nobody has cleared in a decade. Overcrowding is a documented pressure here too. The City reports that about 1,955 low-to-moderate income households experience overcrowding, and that 440 of those cases involve more than one unrelated family sharing a dwelling. Households that dense accumulate faster than a weekly six-item sweep clears, and when a long-tenured home finally turns over the volume arrives all at once. See garage cleanouts, estate cleanouts and mattress removal.

Then Valley Boulevard. The City's specific plan covers roughly 130 acres, excluding streets and alleys, along the entire 3.1-mile run of Valley Boulevard through Alhambra, largely developed as retail commercial with auto repair and light industrial at the western end. It is a restaurant and small-shop corridor with tight rear service yards and shared bins, and a tenant change there produces fixtures, cooking equipment, shelving and fit-out debris in a single weekend. The residential sweep does not cover any of it without a booking, and the state's recycling mandates under AB 341 and AB 1826 only reach multi-family properties of five units or more, which leaves the small buildings and small businesses in between to sort it out themselves. See commercial junk removal.

Where it goes

The disposal chain
for an Alhambra load.

Nothing that is banned from the curb in Alhambra is banned from being recycled properly, it just has to be driven somewhere. Household hazardous waste has two free routes and Alhambra residents can use both. LA Sanitation's S.A.F.E. Collection Centers are free to City of Los Angeles and LA County residents alike, and the City of Alhambra names the Los Angeles-Glendale center at 4600 Colorado Boulevard as the closest one; it opens Saturdays 9am to 3pm and, because it sits inside a water reclamation plant, a state-issued photo ID is required at the security gate. The Washington Boulevard center at 2649 East Washington Boulevard is the other near option and both the City and LA Sanitation currently list it as temporarily closed, so check before you drive. The second route is the LA County Public Works roundup circuit, held Saturdays 9am to 3pm, free, capped at 15 gallons or 125 pounds per vehicle, with no business waste and no tires, explosives, ammunition or radioactive material accepted. Alhambra's own annual roundup is normally held in August at the LA County Public Works headquarters on South Fremont Avenue in Alhambra; the 2026 event ran on 29 August.

Everything else routes by material. Electronics have been universal waste in California since the state exemption ended on 9 February 2006, so televisions, monitors and IT gear go to a certified handler rather than a bin. Usable furniture and household goods go to donation. Scrap metal and dead appliances go to a metals recycler, with refrigerant recovered first. Mattresses go into the state-funded recycling program; California's mattress recycling fee rose to $18.00 per unit on April 1, 2026, which is the charge built into a new mattress purchase, not a disposal charge we pass on. Green waste goes to composting. Paint goes free to a PaintCare drop-off. Remodel and demolition debris goes to a certified mixed construction and demolition processor: LA Sanitation publishes the audited 2026 recycling rate for every facility it certifies, and the two nearest to Alhambra are City Terrace Recycling at 1525 Fishburn Avenue, running 72.75 per cent, and American Reclamation at 4560 Doran Street, running 80.75 per cent. If your project sits inside City of Los Angeles limits, using a certified processor is not optional, and LASAN takes questions on (213) 485-1374. See e-waste disposal and construction debris removal.

Alhambra
questions

Mostly about what the weekly sweep will and will not take.

Does LA Sanitation collect bulky items in Alhambra?

No. Alhambra is its own incorporated city in the western San Gabriel Valley and is not served by LA Sanitation. Collection is Republic Services under an exclusive city franchise, and the bulky rules are Alhambra's own, not the City of Los Angeles rules.

How many bulky items can I put out in Alhambra without booking?

Six. For six items or fewer on your cart service day, no advance scheduling with Republic Services is required. Above six items you are asked to email alhambra@republicservices.com or call 800-299-4898 first, and businesses must schedule every pickup regardless of quantity.

Will the sweep take my old fridge or television?

Only if you scheduled it. Appliances and electronics are collected curbside in Alhambra but must be booked with Republic in advance and labeled with your address, and unscheduled items are left behind with the homeowner subject to a fine. Anything that may contain refrigerant has to be drained first. See appliance removal.

Can I put remodel debris out with the bulky items?

No. Construction and demolition debris is refused outright by the Alhambra sweep, along with tires and car bodies. Drywall, tile, lumber and concrete need a hauler and a certified mixed C&D processor. The two closest to Alhambra are City Terrace Recycling and American Reclamation, both certified by LA Sanitation with published audited recycling rates.

Where do I take paint, pool chemicals and motor oil from an Alhambra house?

Not the bin, and not the curb. The Los Angeles-Glendale S.A.F.E. Center at 4600 Colorado Boulevard is the nearest permanent free drop-off, Saturdays 9 to 3, with a state photo ID needed at the gate. LA County also runs free Saturday roundups, capped at 15 gallons or 125 pounds per vehicle with no business waste. If we are clearing the garage we separate those items and route them for you.

Can you get to a garage that only opens onto the alley?

Yes. Alley-access rear garages are normal in Alhambra and are often the easier job, because the load never crosses the house. Tell us the alley and the gate width when you call so the crew brings the right truck and shuttles rather than blocks it. See garage cleanouts.
