In short

South Pasadena is not served by LA Sanitation. It has been its own incorporated city since 1888, and residential collection is handled by Athens Services under contract to the city. Athens gives every residential customer one free curbside bulky item pickup per quarter, up to four per calendar year, with a maximum of five items per pickup, booked at least 24 hours ahead on (888) 336-6100 or at AthensServices.com/Bulky. Construction debris, hazardous materials, electronics and tires are not accepted on that truck. Neither is a garage. Los Angeles Junk Removal & Hauling takes everything the program leaves behind, at one flat volume-based price agreed before we load.

Most junk removal pages treat South Pasadena as a suburb of the City of Los Angeles. It isn't one. Nothing on the MyLA311 bulky item page applies here, the 1-800-773-2489 line will not book you a pickup, and the free LA Sanitation drop-off events are for City of LA residents. The rules that govern a South Pasadena address are the city's own franchise with Athens Services and the city's own municipal code.

What that produces on the ground is a small, dense, very old city where the free option is real but narrow, and where the access is harder than the terrain suggests. See garage cleanouts, estate cleanouts and how our pricing works.

The free option first

Four free pickups a year.
Five items each.

Use the Athens pickup for what it covers, because it costs nothing and it is genuinely useful. The City of South Pasadena names Athens Services as its authorized waste collection agency, and residents get three carts: black for refuse, blue for recycling, green for organics. On top of that, single-family and multifamily residential customers each get one bulky item pickup per quarter, up to four times per calendar year, with a maximum of five items per pickup. Requests go in at AthensServices.com/Bulky or on (888) 336-6100 at least 24 hours in advance, and the items have to be at the curb by 6 a.m. on the scheduled day. The program launched in July 2025 and replaced the old Dumpster Day and Senior Citizen Dumpster Week events, so there is no longer a box to carry things to. Tenants in multifamily buildings book through the property owner or the HOA rather than directly.

Five items is the number that decides most jobs. A sofa, a bed frame, a mattress, a box spring and a dresser is five items. That is one bedroom. It is not a detached 1920s garage, it is not a basement, and it is not the volume a family produces when a house changes hands. The quarterly cadence matters too: if you used the pickup in April, the next free one is not available until the following quarter, which is a poor fit for a move or a probate deadline.

The refusal list is where South Pasadena differs sharply from the City of Los Angeles next door. Electronics are not accepted, so there is no equivalent of LA Sanitation's free curbside TV and monitor collection here. Tires are not accepted. Construction and demolition debris is not accepted, and Athens directs residents to rent a container instead. Hazardous material is not accepted in any container: paint, solvents, pool chemicals, automotive fluids and cleaning products all need a separate route. See e-waste disposal and construction debris removal.

One more piece of the code is worth knowing before you hire anyone. South Pasadena Municipal Code 16.5 reserves the collection, transport and disposal of the city's waste streams to the city or its franchise hauler, and then writes in two express carve-outs. Gardening, tree trimming and tree removal contractors may remove and dispose of the by-product of their own job within 24 hours of finishing it. And any person may collect, transport and dispose of building material residue resulting from structural work carried out under a building permit issued by the city. Those two lines are why permitted remodel debris and tree work leave South Pasadena on a contractor's truck rather than in a cart, and they are worth quoting to anyone who tells you otherwise.

On the ground

Eight-foot driveways
and 1920s garages.

The access problem in South Pasadena is the age of the housing, not the steepness of the ground. The city's own General Plan Housing Element puts 37 percent of occupied housing units at 1939 or earlier, with a median year built of 1952 — one of the oldest housing stocks in Los Angeles County. That age shows up as original single-width driveways, detached garages sitting at the back of deep lots, and alleys doing work the street cannot.

The zoning code still reflects it. Section 36.310.090 of the municipal code requires only a continuous eight-foot-wide driveway from the street to the required parking area for a single-family home, and where the garage is set back more than 24 feet the driveway may be as narrow as 12 feet at the property line and no wider than 18. Detached garages are pushed behind the front-most dwelling and can sit as little as two feet off a side or rear property line. In practice that is a long narrow run to a small pre-war garage with a low header and a door sized for a car nobody drives any more. We park on the street, protect the surface and carry, or we work off the alley where the lot has one — the code itself requires exterior storage areas on alley-served sites to be directly accessible from the alley. Tell us on the phone whether the garage faces the street or the alley and we send the right size truck. See garage cleanouts.

Then there is the preservation regime, which is stricter than almost anything else in the San Gabriel Valley. Under municipal code section 2.65(e)(3), a certificate of appropriateness may be required to demolish a building or structure that is 45 years or older even when it has never been identified as a cultural resource, and any project including that demolition has to file a notice of intent to demolish with the community development department. South Pasadena has designated more than fifty local landmarks and five historic districts and has been a Certified Local Government since 2001. The practical effect on hauling is simple: the shed, the garage and the outbuilding are not automatically yours to knock down, so the interior clear-out usually happens long before anything structural is settled. We empty the building and leave the fabric alone unless you have the paperwork in hand. See estate cleanouts.

Mission Street and Fair Oaks Avenue are the commercial half of the city and run on different rules again. The Downtown Specific Plan, adopted 27 September 2023 and amended 20 August 2025, covers the Fair Oaks corridor between SR-110 and Bank Street and the Mission Street corridor between Hope Street and El Centro. It is small-format retail in old buildings: narrow shopfronts, shared rear service yards, no loading dock and residential above. Business-generated waste is outside the residential bulky program entirely, so a shop fit-out, a restaurant refit or an office clearance on Mission has no free route at all. We work those off the alley or a parking bay, in whatever window the block will tolerate.

The SR-710 corridor properties are a category of their own. Caltrans still holds surplus residential properties in South Pasadena, Pasadena and El Sereno that were bought decades ago for a freeway extension that was never built, and is disposing of them under the Roberti Act through a priority order that begins with occupants and housing-related entities and ends at public auction. Houses rented out and lightly maintained for thirty or forty years do not hand over empty. Those jobs are decades of accumulated belongings, a garage full of somebody else's things, and a date set by escrow rather than by anyone's convenience.

Where it goes

The disposal chain
for a South Pasadena load.

Because the bulky truck refuses electronics, tires, remodel debris and anything hazardous, most South Pasadena households end up holding a pile with no municipal route at all. Every part of that pile has a named destination.

Household hazardous waste has no curbside option in South Pasadena. The nearest permanent drop-off is the LA-Glendale S.A.F.E. Collection Center at 4600 Colorado Blvd, Los Angeles 90039, a short run north from Mission Street. It is Saturday only, 9 a.m. to 3 p.m., and because it sits inside a water reclamation plant a state photo ID is checked at the security gate. It is free, it serves LA County residents as well as City of LA residents, and it takes no business waste. The load limit is a California transport rule rather than a local one: 125 pounds or 15 gallons per visit. LA County also runs free household hazardous waste and e-waste collection events at rotating sites most Saturdays, 9 to 3, listed by CleanLA and on 1-888-CLEAN-LA, and one of those is often closer than the drive to Glendale.

Electronics are universal waste in California. The DTSC exemption ended on 9 February 2006, which banned televisions, computers and monitors, printers, microwaves, fluorescent lamps, mercury thermostats and household batteries from the trash outright. That is the legal reason the Athens bulky truck will not take a CRT television and the reason one left standing in an alley off Fair Oaks is a code problem rather than a gift to the neighbors. We route e-waste to a certified handler.

The rest splits cleanly. Usable furniture, tools and household goods go to donation, which is worth doing properly in a city where a 1920s house often gives up things worth rehoming. Scrap metal goes to a recycler. Refrigerators, freezers and air conditioners contain refrigerant and go to a handler equipped to recover it before the shell is scrapped, which is not something you can do at the curb — see appliance removal. Mattresses and box springs go into California's state-funded Mattress Recycling Council program rather than to landfill. Paint goes free to any PaintCare drop-off, and California has more than 800 of them, mostly paint retailers and household hazardous waste facilities. Garden and tree waste goes to composting rather than the landfill — see yard waste removal. Mixed remodel and demolition debris goes to a certified construction and demolition processing facility rather than straight into a hole.

South Pasadena
questions

Who collects, what they refuse, and how to get to a 1920s garage.

How many free bulky item pickups do South Pasadena residents get?

Four a calendar year — one per quarter — with a maximum of five items per pickup. The program is run by Athens Services under contract to the City of South Pasadena. Book at AthensServices.com/Bulky or on (888) 336-6100 at least 24 hours in advance and have the items at the curb by 6 a.m. on the scheduled day. Tenants in multifamily buildings request through the property owner or HOA.

Does LA Sanitation collect bulky items in South Pasadena?

No. South Pasadena has been its own incorporated city since 1888 and is not part of the City of Los Angeles. MyLA311, the 1-800-773-2489 bulky line and the free LASAN drop-off events do not apply to a South Pasadena address. Your hauler is Athens Services on (888) 336-6100.

Will the bulky pickup take my old television or computer?

No. Electronics are excluded from the South Pasadena bulky item program. E-waste has been universal waste in California since the DTSC exemption ended in February 2006, so it cannot go in the trash either. The free options are the LA-Glendale S.A.F.E. Center on Colorado Blvd, Saturdays 9 to 3, or an LA County collection event. We take it in the same load as everything else if that is easier. See e-waste disposal.

Can you haul debris from a South Pasadena remodel?

Yes. Construction and demolition debris is refused by the bulky program, and municipal code 16.5 specifically permits building material residue from structural work under a city building permit to be collected and hauled separately. We take it to a certified construction and demolition processing facility. See construction debris removal.

My garage is a detached 1920s one off the alley with a narrow driveway. Can you reach it?

Yes, and it is the most common South Pasadena job we do. The code only requires an eight-foot continuous driveway for a single-family home, so most of these lots were never built for a truck to reach the back. We work off the alley where there is one, and otherwise park on the street, lay protection and carry. Tell us on the phone whether the garage opens to the street or the alley. See garage cleanouts.

Where do I take paint and pool chemicals from a South Pasadena house?

Not the bin and not the curb. The LA-Glendale S.A.F.E. Collection Center at 4600 Colorado Blvd is the nearest permanent site, Saturday only, 9 to 3, free, with a state photo ID checked at the gate because it sits inside a water reclamation plant. California caps you at 125 pounds or 15 gallons per visit and no business waste is taken. Paint alone can also go free to any PaintCare drop-off. If we are clearing the property we separate it and route it for you.
