In short

Los Feliz is part of the City of Los Angeles, so LA Sanitation collects bulky items free and with no annual cap from a Los Feliz curb on your trash day, booked via MyLA311 or 1-800-773-2489. What that program cannot do is empty a 1920s house: the basement, the attic, the detached garage and the contents of a property held by one family for fifty years. Those clear-outs need sorting, care and a real crew. That is our work here, at one flat volume-based price.

Los Feliz has some of the oldest and largest housing stock on the east side, and unusually for Los Angeles, many of these houses have proper basements. That is where the volume hides. Add attics, detached garages and long tenure, and an estate clear-out here regularly fills a truck more than once.

We sort rather than shovel. Donations routed properly, anything of possible value staged for a family member or appraiser, hazardous material separated, floors and stairs protected. One flat number quoted after walking the property. See estate cleanouts and how our pricing works.

The free option first

Free from the curb,
but not from the basement.

LA Sanitation's bulky item pickup is free and unlimited for single-family residents, requested online, on the MyLA311 app, or on the 24-hour line at 1-800-773-2489, and collected on your regular trash day with at least one business day's notice. It takes furniture, mattresses and box springs, toilets and sinks, rolled and tied carpet, doors, large wood pieces and e-waste including TVs, computers and monitors. It refuses automotive parts and used oil, construction materials, commercial appliances, paint, solvents and chemicals, medicines and needles, and fluorescent tubes.

For a single item you can get to the parkway, that is the right answer and we will tell you so. For a property clear-out it is not even close. The program does not come inside, does not go down to a basement, does not sort, does not handle the paint and chemicals that are always in an old garage, and does not work to an escrow or probate date. On the hillside streets below Griffith Park there is also frequently nowhere for a collection truck to stop.

On the ground

Basements, attics
and hillside drives.

The 1920s Spanish and Mediterranean houses of Los Feliz were built with real basements, which is rare in Los Angeles and matters enormously for a clear-out. Basement stairs are narrow, steep and often turn at a half-landing, so large items come apart before they come up. Attics are the same problem in reverse: a hatch and a ladder rather than a staircase.

Detached garages sit at the end of long driveways, usually with old paint, thinner, motor oil and garden chemicals somewhere at the back. Those get separated and routed to a S.A.F.E. Center rather than tipped with the household load. Above Los Feliz Boulevard and up toward Griffith Park the streets get steep and narrow with no turnaround, so we size the truck to the road.

Because so much of our Los Feliz work is estate work, the way we handle it matters as much as the speed. Quiet crews, protection on floors and stairs, a clear line on what is being kept, and a willingness to stop and ask rather than assume. Nothing leaves without a decision.

Where it goes

The disposal chain
for a Los Feliz load.

On estate work, sorting is the job. Furniture, books, art, textiles, china and tools go to donation or resale where they are usable, and anything potentially valuable is staged rather than loaded. Scrap metal is recycled. Mattresses go into California's state-funded mattress recycling program. Electronics are universal waste in California and go to a certified handler. Paint goes free to PaintCare, which has over 800 California drop-off locations, and solvents, motor oil and garden chemicals go to a S.A.F.E. Collection Center โ€” LA-Glendale at 4600 Colorado Blvd is nearest, Saturday only 9 to 3 with state photo ID required. Renovation debris goes to a City-certified mixed C&D processing facility.

Los Feliz facts
  1. Los Feliz is in the City of Los Angeles, so LA Sanitation bulky pickup is free and unlimited but curbside only.
  2. Unusually for Los Angeles, many 1920s Los Feliz houses have real basements, which is where the volume in an estate clear-out sits.
  3. LA Sanitation will not enter a Los Feliz house, clear a basement or attic, or sort contents.
  4. Old paint, thinner and motor oil from a Los Feliz garage must go to PaintCare or a S.A.F.E. Center, never to the curb.
  5. The nearest S.A.F.E. Center to Los Feliz is LA-Glendale on Colorado Boulevard: Saturday only, 9 to 3, state photo ID required at the gate.

We are on these streets constantly because we are already next door: Silver Lake, Echo Park, Hollywood, Glendale, North Hollywood. If your job straddles two of them it is still one visit and one number. The full list is on areas we serve.

Los Feliz
questions

Estate timelines and old houses.

Do you clear basements and attics in Los Feliz?

Yes, and it is a lot of what we do here. Basement stairs are narrow and turn at a landing, so large items are broken down before they come up. Attic contents come down a hatch and a ladder. Both are priced into the flat quote after we look.

Can you work to a probate or escrow date?

Yes. Tell us the date and we will schedule the crew to hit it, including working weekends. See estate cleanouts.

Will you throw away something valuable by mistake?

No. On estate work we stage anything potentially valuable rather than loading it, and we stop and ask instead of assuming. Nothing leaves the property without a decision from you.

What happens to old paint and chemicals from the garage?

They are separated out and routed properly. Paint goes free to a PaintCare drop-off; solvents, motor oil and garden chemicals go to a S.A.F.E. Center. LA-Glendale is nearest but is Saturday only and needs a state photo ID at the gate.

Can you get a truck up a steep Los Feliz street?

We size the vehicle to the road rather than the load, and shuttle if there is no turnaround. That gets decided on the walk-through so the quote does not move.
