In short

North Hollywood is inside the City of Los Angeles, so LA Sanitation collects bulky items free and with no annual cap through MyLA311 or 1-800-773-2489. The catch in North Hollywood is that the program is written for a single-family curb, and most of North Hollywood is not one. It is apartments, duplexes and fourplexes with bin enclosures down an alley, and a sofa left beside those bins is not on a parkway waiting for a scheduled truck. It is a dumping problem your building manager owns by morning. Los Angeles Junk Removal & Hauling clears it from inside the unit, on the day, at one flat volume-based price.

North Hollywood turns over faster than almost anywhere else in the Valley. The NoHo Arts District pulled apartment construction along Lankershim and Magnolia, the older stucco fourplexes on the side streets fill and empty on short leases, and the post houses, rehearsal rooms and small production offices around the Metro station cycle through kit constantly.

That gives us two steady jobs here. One is the move-out: a unit emptied in a hurry with a mattress, a sofa and a fridge left behind. The other is commercial: a suite giving up desks, racks, monitors and set pieces on a lease end. See furniture removal, commercial junk removal and how our pricing works.

The free option first

Free at the curb.
A problem in the alley.

For a single-family North Hollywood address the city service is genuinely good and you should use it. LA Sanitation calls bulky item collection an unlimited curbside service at no additional charge. Book it on the online request form, in the MyLA311 app, or on the 24-hour Customer Care line at 1-800-773-2489, list the items so the right sized truck is sent, and set them out for your normal collection day with at least one business day of notice. Furniture, mattresses and box springs, carpet if it is rolled and tied, toilets, sinks, doors, large wood and e-waste including televisions and monitors are all accepted.

North Hollywood's problem is the word curbside. In a fourplex or a courtyard block the residents' route to the bins is an alley or a shared enclosure, not a parkway, and a mattress parked there sits outside the program. It also attracts company: once one item is out, more appears, and the building ends up with a pile nobody booked and nobody owns.

Two more exclusions bite here specifically. Cardboard is only collected as part of a scheduled Move In / Move Out service, which is exactly the moment a North Hollywood unit generates most of it. And business-generated waste is out of scope entirely, so a NoHo rehearsal space or post suite has no city route for its old racks and flats at all.

On the ground

Stairs, alleys
and permit parking.

Most North Hollywood work is carried, not wheeled. Two-story walk-up blocks with an exterior stair and a landing at the turn, courtyard buildings where the unit door is fifty yards from any vehicle, and subterranean garages with a clearance bar that decides which truck we bring. We size the vehicle to the entrance before the day, which is why the number quoted on the walk-through is the number you pay.

Parking is the other constraint. Large parts of North Hollywood run permit districts and street cleaning windows, and the streets around the NoHo Arts District and the Metro portal fill early. Where the alley is the only loading point we work from it and keep it clear, because those alleys are the bin route for every building on the block.

The commercial side has its own shape. Post houses, dance studios, rehearsal rooms and small production offices along Lankershim and Magnolia clear out on lease ends and wrap dates, often outside business hours. Racks, monitors, cable, flats, seating and cases go in one visit, with a certificate of insurance sent ahead to the building if the management company wants one. See e-waste disposal.

Where it goes

The disposal chain
for a NoHo load.

We sort before we load. Usable furniture, kitchenware and working appliances go to donation, which on a move-out is usually most of the van. Metal goes to a recycler. Mattresses enter California's state-funded recycling program, funded by a recycling fee that rose to $18.00 per unit on April 1, 2026 and charged at purchase, not to you at collection. Electronics are universal waste in California, so monitors, televisions, drives and cable go to a certified handler rather than a bin. Paint goes free to any PaintCare drop-off. Solvents, aerosols, batteries and automotive fluids go to a S.A.F.E. Collection Center, and North Hollywood's nearest is Randall Street, 11025 Randall St, Sun Valley, open Saturdays and Sundays 9 to 3, free, capped by California at 125 pounds or 15 gallons per visit. Demolition and remodel debris from a unit refit is mixed construction and demolition waste, which the City requires be delivered to a certified processing facility; Crown Recycling in Sun Valley is audited at 81.28% and is one of the nearest certified processors to North Hollywood.

Worth knowing

North Hollywood
in five lines.

North Hollywood facts
  1. North Hollywood is in the City of Los Angeles, so LA Sanitation bulky pickup is free and unlimited but curbside only.
  2. An item left in a North Hollywood alley or bin enclosure is not covered by the city program and is treated as dumping.
  3. LASAN only collects cardboard as part of a scheduled Move In / Move Out service, which is when a North Hollywood unit produces most of it.
  4. Business-generated waste from a NoHo studio, post house or office is excluded from the city program entirely.
  5. The nearest hazardous waste and e-waste drop-off to North Hollywood is the Randall Street S.A.F.E. Center, 11025 Randall St, Sun Valley, weekends 9 to 3.

We are on these streets constantly because we are already next door: Valley Village, Studio City, Burbank, Van Nuys, Sherman Oaks. If your job straddles two of them it is still one visit and one number. The full list is on areas we serve.

North Hollywood
questions

Mostly apartments, alleys and lease ends.

Can I just leave a mattress by the bins in my North Hollywood building?

No. LA Sanitation's bulky collection is curbside, so an item in an alley or a bin enclosure is not in the program and is treated as illegal dumping. Either move it to the parkway and book a pickup through MyLA311, or have us take it from the unit. See mattress removal.

I manage a fourplex here and tenants keep leaving furniture behind. What is the fix?

One scheduled clearance per turnover rather than chasing items. We work from the unit, take the stairs, and leave the alley and the enclosure clear. It is quoted by volume on a walk-through, so you know the number before we lift anything.

Do you handle production offices and post houses in the NoHo Arts District?

Yes, and the city program does not, because business waste is excluded from it. We take racks, monitors, cable, seating, flats and cases, work after-hours windows, and send a certificate of insurance to building management ahead of the visit. See commercial junk removal.

Where does old computer gear from a North Hollywood office actually go?

To a certified electronics handler. Electronics have been universal waste in California since the state's exemption ended in February 2006, so drives, monitors and televisions cannot go in a bin. Residents can also drop them free at the Randall Street S.A.F.E. Center in Sun Valley, weekends 9 to 3.

Can you get a sofa down from a second-floor walk-up?

Yes. Most North Hollywood buildings are exterior-stair walk-ups and everything comes down by hand, in pieces if the landing turn is tight. Tell us the floor and the stair when you call so the crew arrives sized for it.
