Start with the free service, because for a good share of North Hollywood it is genuinely the right answer. LA Sanitation describes bulky item collection as an unlimited curbside service at no additional charge, with no per-item or per-year cap for single-family residents. It is requested through the online service request form, the MyLA311 app, or the 24-hour Customer Care Center on 1-800-773-2489, at least one business day ahead, and collected on your regular trash day, with an itemized list so a correctly sized truck is dispatched. Accepted: furniture, mattresses and box springs, toilets and sinks, rolled and tied carpet, large wood pieces and doors, plus e-waste including televisions, computers and monitors.
Now the part that decides most NoHo furniture jobs. The City of Los Angeles splits residential and commercial collection at five units, and LASAN publishes the definition on its recycLA pages verbatim from the state regulations: a commercial business includes a multifamily residential dwelling, with the carve-out that a multifamily residential dwelling of fewer than five units is not a commercial business for the purposes of that chapter. In practice, buildings of five or more units are recycLA customers, served by the hauler assigned to their zone, and the free residential bulky pickup is not part of their arrangement. A duplex, triplex or fourplex sits on the residential side and keeps it.
That distinction is not academic in a neighborhood built on small apartment blocks. Two identical-looking two-story buildings a hundred feet apart on the same street can be on opposite sides of the line, and the tenant in the larger one who books a free bulky pickup for a sofa is booking a service their address does not have. If you are unsure, count the front doors, then check who bills the building for collection.
Whichever side you are on, the free route has the same physical limit. It is a curbside collection. The truck expects the item on the parkway on your trash day. Everything between the apartment and the parkway — the exterior stair, the tuck-under parking, the shared driveway, the security gate — is somebody's carry. The published refusals are worth knowing too: construction materials, concrete, brick and dirt, paints, solvents and chemicals, automotive parts and used oil, commercial appliances, fluorescent lights, and cardboard unless it is part of a scheduled Move In / Move Out service, which matters at the end of a move when the flat-pack boxes are the last thing standing.
