In short

Studio City is a Los Angeles neighborhood, so LA Sanitation collects bulky furniture free at the curb on the regular trash day, for properties of one to four units. The program never covers the carry. On streets climbing toward Mulholland, living floors sit below a road-level carport, and those stairs belong to nobody.

The free option is real and it is genuinely generous. LA Sanitation describes bulky item collection as an unlimited curbside service at no additional charge, published for single-family residents, which LASAN defines as a home of one to four units serviced by LASAN. You request it at least one business day before your normal collection, online, through the MyLA311 app or on the 24-hour Customer Care Center at 1-800-773-2489, with an itemized list so the right-sized truck is dispatched. Couches, tables, chairs, mattresses and box springs, toilets and sinks, rolled and tied carpet, large wood pieces and doors are all on the accepted list.

What the program does not describe anywhere is how the couch reaches the curb, and in Studio City that is not a detail. Where the land rises south of the boulevard, a house is frequently entered by descending from the street, so the piece has to be lifted up a flight of exterior steps rather than walked out level. Where the land is flat, the same job is often on the second floor of a walk-up off the corridor. Los Angeles Junk Removal & Hauling does the part between the room and the truck, and prices it flat before anybody lifts anything.

Ask anyone in Studio City to describe their street and they will start with the elevation. The blocks between Ventura Boulevard and the Los Angeles River are level and gridded. South of the boulevard the ground turns upward almost immediately, and the houses stop being level with the road: a carport or a pad at street height, then the front door a half-story or a full story below it, or the reverse, with the entry stacked above a tuck-under garage. Both arrangements look ordinary from a car. Neither is ordinary with a sectional.

That geography is the whole of this page. What we clear across the neighborhood is on junk removal in Studio City, and the county-wide service is on furniture removal.

The free route, and where it ends

Free, unlimited,
and it stops at the road edge.

Take the city service first whenever it fits, because it costs nothing and there is no annual cap on it. LASAN publishes bulky item collection as an unlimited curbside service at no additional charge, collected on your regular trash day, and asks only that you give at least one business day of notice. Three channels do the same thing: the online service request form, the MyLA311 app on Android or iPhone, or the Customer Care Center on 1-800-773-2489, which is staffed around the clock. LASAN's own tip is to have an itemized list ready, meaning a quick inventory such as one mattress, two chairs and a desk, so the dispatcher sends a truck of the right size rather than guessing.

Before any of that, LASAN asks you to consider donating. The page opens by encouraging residents to give furniture in good shape to a thrift store or a charity or to list it on a community exchange, and only then offers to come and collect. That is the correct order of operations and it is the same order we work in.

Two limits decide whether the program is yours. The first is the property. LASAN publishes this service under Single-Family Residents and defines that as a home of one to four units serviced by LASAN. A building of five units or more is served instead by recycLA, the city's franchise system for multi-family and commercial properties, and those addresses are covered by the Multi-family Bulky Item Fee, which appears on the Los Angeles Department of Water and Power bill rather than being requested from a city crew. LASAN describes that fee as funding an on-call service for couches and other furniture, mattresses, doors, carpet, toilets, electrical waste and appliances, adjusted by an ordinance the City Council approved in October 2025 and implemented in November 2025. Along the Ventura corridor, where a great deal of Studio City's housing is apartments and condominiums, the number of units in your building is therefore the first thing worth checking.

The second limit is the word curbside, and it is the one that undoes the program on the hillside. Collection happens at the road. Nothing in the service covers a carry, a stair, a gate, a landing or a driveway, and many of the streets rising south of Ventura have no parkway strip to stage on at all, only pavement and then a wall or a drop. A sectional left at the edge of a one-lane road with no shoulder is an obstruction rather than a pickup. That is not a criticism of LASAN; a municipal truck route cannot send two people down thirty steps into a private yard. It is simply where the free service stops and where somebody has to do the lifting.

The carry, block by block

Below the carport,
above the garage, or off the corridor.

Three housing patterns cover almost every furniture call we take here, and each one fails in its own way.

The first is the downhill house. The pad is at road level and holds the cars; the living floors descend from it on an exterior stair, sometimes with a mid-flight landing and a ninety-degree turn where the hillside dictated it. Furniture has to travel up that stair, which is the harder direction, and the turn is what actually decides the job: a queen box spring or a long sofa back has to pivot in the width of the landing, and if it cannot, the piece comes apart or it comes out over a rail. We measure the landing, not the doorway. A deck sliding door at the low end is often the better exit even though it is further from the truck.

The second is the uphill house, entered above a tuck-under garage or from a stepped walk climbing away from the road. Here the descent is the easy part and the truck position is the hard part, because the street is narrow, cars line one side and there is no legal place to stand a vehicle for an hour without blocking a neighbor. We solve that by using a vehicle sized to the street and staging in shuttle runs rather than by parking once and hoping.

The third is the corridor building. On and near Ventura Boulevard the housing stock turns to apartments and condominiums, and the constraints become the building's rather than the hill's. A subterranean or tuck-under garage with a posted clearance a box truck will not pass under. One elevator, sometimes with a reservation sheet. A shared driveway that is somebody's only exit. An association that wants notice, a service-elevator booking or a certificate of insurance before a move. Those are all workable, but they are scheduling facts, not surprises, so we ask about them on the walk-through. If the furniture is stacked in a garage rather than a room, that is a different shape of job: see garage cleanouts.

One more thing that is specific to this side of the Valley. A hillside room is often the room a piece was assembled in. A sleeper sofa carried in before a railing went up, a wall unit built on site, a bed frame taken through a window opening during construction: none of those come out the way they went in, and disassembly at the address is part of the work rather than an extra. We would rather take twenty minutes with a driver than take twenty minutes off a doorframe.

Tell us the piece, the floor it is on and how many steps sit between it and the road.

Where a Studio City piece goes

Sorted in the room,
not at the tailgate.

The decision that matters happens before anything is stacked, because once a sofa has a bookcase on top of it nobody will take it. Sound, clean, odor-free upholstery and almost any solid wood case piece has a second life, and LASAN itself puts donation ahead of collection on its own bulky item page. We make that call in the room with you, not in the truck bed afterward.

What cannot be reused is separated rather than tipped as one load. Solid timber, engineered board, metal frames, springs and glass all have different destinations, and a dresser or a desk is mostly board and metal once the drawers are out. Mattresses and box springs leave a furniture job surprisingly often, and those have their own statewide funding: California charges a recycling fee on every mattress, futon and foundation at the point of sale, which rose to $18.00 per unit for sales on or after April 1, 2026, and the program that fee pays for is run by the Mattress Recycling Council under CalRecycle oversight. Our mattress removal in Studio City page covers exactly what that buys and what it does not.

Then there is the part of a furniture load that is not furniture. A powered recliner contains a motor and a transformer. A media wall leaves with a television still in it. Those are universal waste in California and cannot go in the trash, which is why LASAN routes chemicals and electronics to its S.A.F.E. Collection Centers rather than the curb. And if the clearance has turned into a remodel, remember that LASAN's prohibited list names construction materials, concrete, brick and dirt outright: that stream is governed separately and is covered on construction debris removal in Studio City.

Studio City furniture
questions

The free pickup, the stairs, the building rules and where the piece ends up.

Will the city take my couch from a Studio City address for free?

If your property is a home of one to four units serviced by LA Sanitation, yes. LASAN publishes bulky item collection for single-family residents as an unlimited curbside service at no additional charge, collected on your regular trash day. Book it at least one business day ahead through the online service request form, the MyLA311 app, or the 24-hour Customer Care Center on 1-800-773-2489, and have an itemized list ready so the right-sized truck comes. If your building has five units or more, it is a recycLA address instead and the Multi-family Bulky Item Fee on the LADWP bill covers bulky collection there.

My house is below the street. Will the city crew come down the stairs?

No. The service is curbside, and that is the word to pay attention to. LASAN collects from the road; nothing in the program covers a stair, a gate, a landing or a yard. On the blocks rising south of Ventura Boulevard that is the difference between a free pickup and no pickup at all, because the furniture cannot get to the collection point by itself. That gap is what we exist for, and the walk-through is where the number gets fixed.

Do you take furniture apart?

Routinely, and on hillside jobs it is often the only way out. Bed frames, sectional modules, table bases, wall units and anything assembled in place come apart at the address. It is part of the job rather than an addition to it. Tell us in advance if a piece was built in the room or carried in before a railing or a wall went up, because that decides the tools and the crew size we bring.

What if I live in a condo off Ventura Boulevard?

Then the building sets the rules and we work to them. Tell us the garage clearance height if the loading point is underground, whether there is a service elevator and whether it needs booking, and whether the association wants advance notice or a certificate of insurance. None of that is unusual. What it does mean is that the job is scheduled around the building rather than around the street, which is the opposite of a hillside job.

Can you take a mattress in the same load as the furniture?

Yes, and it is the commonest pairing we see. Mattresses and box springs are accepted at the curb by LASAN too, so if you have a level frontage and the time, that route costs nothing. Where the bed is coming down an exterior stair or out of an upstairs unit, we take it with the rest. The detail of the California recycling program behind it is on our mattress removal in Studio City page.

What actually happens to the furniture after you load it?

It is sorted before loading, not after. Pieces that are clean, sound and free of odor go to donation and reuse, which is the order LA Sanitation itself recommends on its bulky item page. What cannot be reused is split into timber, board, metal, springs and glass for materials recovery instead of leaving as one mixed load. Mattresses go into the state stewardship stream. Anything with a motor or a screen is universal waste in California and goes to a handler set up for it.
