In short

Van Nuys is inside the City of Los Angeles, so residents get LA Sanitation's free, unlimited curbside bulky pickup through MyLA311 or 1-800-773-2489. Van Nuys is also one of the most commercial and industrial neighborhoods in the San Fernando Valley, and the city program covers none of that: business-generated waste is outside the scheme, commercial appliances are refused, and all construction and demolition debris is prohibited at the curb and regulated separately. Los Angeles Junk Removal & Hauling is set up for both the house and the unit, at one flat volume-based price agreed before we start.

Van Nuys is large and genuinely mixed. Residential blocks of post-war single-story homes and apartment buildings sit directly against working commercial and industrial corridors along Van Nuys Boulevard, Sherman Way and Saticoy, with the civic center and courts on one side and Van Nuys Airport and its surrounding light industrial estates on the other.

So the call log here is split. Half of it is ordinary household work: garages, appliances, furniture, move-outs. The other half is commercial: a unit handed back, a shop cleared, a contractor's yard tidied, a tenant improvement stripped out. See commercial junk removal, construction debris removal and how our pricing works.

The free option first

Free for the house.
Nothing for the unit.

For a Van Nuys home, use the city service. LA Sanitation describes bulky item collection as an unlimited curbside service at no additional charge. Book it on the online form, through the MyLA311 app, or on the 24-hour Customer Care line at 1-800-773-2489, list the items so a correctly sized truck is dispatched, and put them out for your normal collection day with at least one business day of notice. Furniture, mattresses and box springs, rolled and tied carpet, toilets, sinks, doors, large wood and household e-waste including televisions and monitors are accepted.

For anything commercial there is no equivalent. Business-generated waste is not part of the residential program, and commercial appliances are explicitly refused. A Van Nuys shop, workshop, warehouse or office has to arrange its own hauling, and if the material is construction or demolition debris the rules are stricter still.

That is the part worth getting right. Since Ordinance 181519 in 2010, all mixed construction and demolition debris generated in the City of Los Angeles must be collected by a permitted private hauler and delivered to a City-certified processing facility. The penalty is up to $5,000 per load taken anywhere else, private haulers must hold an AB 939 Compliance Permit, and LADBS asks building permit applicants to name their permitted hauler or show a self-haul permit. In a neighborhood with as much building work as Van Nuys, that is not a technicality.

On the ground

Roll-up doors,
yards and mezzanines.

Commercial Van Nuys work is dictated by the building. Light industrial units with a single roll-up door and a mezzanine office, older shopfronts with no rear access at all, and yards where the material is outside but the ground is soft. We look at the door height, the turning space and whether we can back in before quoting, because a unit clearance that needs shuttling to the street is a different job from one where we can reverse to the roll-up.

What comes out is heavier than a household load: steel racking, workbenches, pallets, shop fittings, machinery, tires, cable, office furniture and older electronics. Weight rather than volume usually decides what one trip can legally carry. Anything with refrigerant, and any older equipment holding fluids, gets separated rather than crushed in with the rest.

The residential side is straightforward by comparison. Detached garages, side gates, driveways wide enough to work from, and the standard mix of appliances, furniture, mattresses and years of storage. Where a Van Nuys home has been extended or a garage converted, the leftover material is construction debris and takes the regulated route, not the curb. See garage cleanouts and e-waste disposal.

Where it goes

The disposal chain
for a Van Nuys load.

Usable furniture, tools, shop fittings and equipment go to donation or resale where there is a taker. Steel, racking, machinery and appliances go to a metal recycler. Mattresses go into California's state-funded recycling program. Electronics are universal waste in California, so servers, monitors, televisions and drives go to a certified handler. Paint goes free to any PaintCare drop-off. Solvents, aerosols, automotive fluids and used oil go to a S.A.F.E. Collection Center: the Randall Street center at 11025 Randall St, Sun Valley and the Nicole Bernson center at 10241 N Balboa Blvd, Northridge both serve Van Nuys, weekends 9 to 3, free, capped by California at 125 pounds or 15 gallons per visit, with no business waste accepted, so commercial quantities go through the paid Very Small Quantity Generator route by appointment instead. Tires are excluded from curbside pickup and anyone transporting ten or more waste tires must be a CalRecycle-registered waste tire hauler carrying a trip log. Mixed construction and demolition debris goes to a certified processor: Crown Recycling in Sun Valley is audited at 81.28%, America's Recycling Company 3 in Sun Valley at 83.98% and Cordova in Pacoima at 76.20%.

Worth knowing

Van Nuys
in five lines.

We are on these streets constantly because we are already next door: Sherman Oaks, North Hollywood, Valley Village, Encino, Tarzana. If your job straddles two of them it is still one visit and one number. The full list is on areas we serve.

Van Nuys
questions

Split between the houses and the units.

Can my Van Nuys business use the free city bulky pickup?

No. LA Sanitation's bulky collection is a residential service and business-generated waste sits outside it, with commercial appliances refused outright. A shop, unit or office arranges its own hauling. We carry insurance and can send a certificate of insurance to your landlord ahead of the visit. See commercial junk removal.

Where does construction debris from a Van Nuys job have to go?

To a City-certified processing facility, hauled by a permitted hauler. That has been the rule in the City of Los Angeles since the 2010 C&D ordinance, and the penalty is up to $5,000 per load taken elsewhere. LADBS also asks permit applicants to name their hauler. See construction debris removal.

Can you clear a light industrial unit before a lease hands back?

Yes, and that is a large part of our Van Nuys work. Racking, benches, pallets, fittings, machinery, office furniture and old IT go in one visit, quoted flat on a walk-through. We work around your access hours and reverse to the roll-up where the yard allows it.

Do you take old servers, monitors and shop electronics?

Yes. Electronics have been universal waste in California since the state exemption ended in February 2006, so they cannot go in a bin. They go to a certified handler. Household quantities can also go free to the Randall Street or Nicole Bernson S.A.F.E. Centers at weekends. See e-waste disposal.

What about tires from a Van Nuys shop?

They are excluded from curbside pickup and they are regulated in transport. Anyone moving ten or more waste tires in California has to be a CalRecycle-registered waste tire hauler carrying a trip log, which is exactly why shops call a hauler rather than moving them themselves.
