In short

North Hollywood's free bulky item pickup takes a household appliance at the curb, but only curbside, never from commercial premises, and not from buildings of five or more units. Any sealed refrigeration circuit must be recovered before the shell becomes scrap. Disconnection, the carry out and the routing happen in one visit, quoted free.

North Hollywood sits directly alongside the Valley's disposal infrastructure, which makes appliance work here logistically straightforward and legally unchanged. The city's free bulky item pickup will take a household appliance at the curb — unlimited, no annual cap for single-family addresses, booked at least one business day ahead on 1-800-773-2489 or through MyLA311 — but it refuses commercial appliances outright, it is curbside only, and it does not apply to buildings of five or more units, which are recycLA customers. Meanwhile anything with a sealed refrigeration circuit has to have that circuit recovered before the shell can be processed as scrap. The nearest S.A.F.E. collection center for the electronic and chemical material that comes out alongside is Randall Street, 11025 Randall Street, Sun Valley, Saturdays and Sundays 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Los Angeles Junk Removal & Hauling disconnects, carries and routes it, quoted free upfront.

An appliance is heavy, rigid, plumbed or wired or both, and in North Hollywood it is usually standing on the second floor of a building with an exterior stair and no elevator. The good news is that the destinations are close: the Sun Valley industrial corridor and the disposal points north of the neighborhood are among the shortest hauls we make anywhere in the county.

This page covers what happens to an appliance here: which route is yours, what has to be dealt with before scrap, and where the metal actually goes. The wider local picture is on junk removal in North Hollywood, and our county-wide service is on appliance removal.

The route for white goods

Household at the curb.
Commercial, never.

LA Sanitation's bulky item pickup covers household appliances and costs nothing. It is described by LASAN as an unlimited curbside service at no additional charge with no per-item or per-year cap for single-family residents, requested through the online form, the MyLA311 app or the 24-hour Customer Care Center on 1-800-773-2489, at least one business day ahead, with an itemized list. Large e-waste — televisions, computers, monitors — rides the same request.

Three limits shape whether that helps you. First, commercial appliances are named on LASAN's prohibited list, which catches the storefront kitchens, studios and converted units that North Hollywood has a lot of. Second, the collection is curbside: the truck expects the appliance standing on the parkway on your trash day, and the exterior stair from a second-floor apartment is not part of it. Third, the residential route belongs to buildings under five units; at five or more, the building is a recycLA customer and its collection is arranged through the hauler assigned to its zone.

Where the material actually goes is a local advantage worth knowing. The S.A.F.E. collection centers accept e-waste, batteries, paint and thinner, solvents, automotive fluids, pool chemicals, fluorescent bulbs and mercury items, pesticides, aerosols, propane cylinders, sharps and medications, free to City and County residents, with a hard state limit of 125 pounds or 15 gallons per visit. The nearest to North Hollywood is Randall Street at 11025 Randall Street, Sun Valley, Saturdays and Sundays 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. LA Sanitation's free monthly Saturday drop-off events run 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., and the nearest site is 11050 Pendleton Street, Sun Valley — ten minutes up the road rather than an afternoon's drive.

The large disposal gate for the Valley is Sunshine Canyon Landfill on San Fernando Road in Sylmar, which publishes its own terms: scales close at 5:00 p.m. on weekdays and 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, there is a one-ton minimum on all materials, and it lists an environmental fee of $19.71 per load and a $175 penalty for an untarped load. Those numbers are not our prices, they are the operating reality behind any heavy load leaving your address, and they are the reason an appliance job late on a Saturday morning is a different conversation from the same job at nine on a Tuesday.

The disconnect and the stair

Water, gas
and a fridge above a parking bay.

Appliance work starts with the connections. A washer has a supply pair and a drain to close and clear without soaking a floor that, in a NoHo walk-up, is somebody else's ceiling. A dishwasher is plumbed and usually hard-wired under a counter. A gas range or gas dryer has a shutoff that has to be closed and capped properly, and where a connection looks perished or altered the right sequence is a licensed plumber first and a truck second. A water heater is full until it is drained, and a full tank on an exterior stair is not a lift, it is an incident.

Then the route. The dominant NoHo apartment type puts kitchens on a second floor served by an open exterior stair, with tuck-under parking beneath and a single narrow driveway. A full-size refrigerator does not turn at the bottom of that stair with the doors on, which is why doors come off in the room, and the treads and the rail get protected before anything moves. Where a piece is genuinely stuck, we say so rather than damaging a stairwell to prove a point.

Where the truck stands is the second half. Trucks generally cannot enter a tuck-under deck, so the load is carried to a legal position on the street, and on permit-parked blocks that may be a few doors down. Studio and production buildings along the industrial spine are the opposite problem: plenty of space, roll-up doors, and sometimes a forklift, but a security process and an access window.

Managed buildings add the familiar layer, and it is worth arranging up front: a certificate of insurance on file, a service entrance, and a window when the old unit can leave and the new one arrive without either standing in a walkway overnight. Delivery and removal in the same window is the tidiest arrangement and we will work to your delivery slot. If the kitchen is being stripped rather than re-equipped, see construction debris removal, and for a whole-unit clear see furniture removal in North Hollywood.

Where it goes

Circuit, then steel,
then the regulated remainder.

Anything with a sealed refrigeration circuit — refrigerator, freezer, window or split air conditioner, dehumidifier, wine cooler — holds refrigerant and compressor oil, and that circuit has to be recovered by someone equipped to do it before the shell can be processed as scrap steel. That is the reason white goods are handled separately from furniture everywhere, and the reason we route those units to a recycler set up for recovery rather than to whichever gate is closest.

Once the circuit is dealt with, an appliance is mostly steel with aluminum and copper in it, and all of that is worth recovering. Washers, dryers, ovens, ranges, dishwashers and water heaters are the same story without the refrigerant step. We separate metal from mixed waste at your property rather than compacting everything into a single load, because separated metal has a good destination and a mixed load has the worst one available.

Electronics are governed by state law. Televisions, monitors, computers, printers, microwaves, cell phones and household batteries are universal waste in California, banned from the household trash since the state's exemption ended on 9 February 2006. The microwave surprises people every time. Those come out separately and go to a certified handler or to the Randall Street S.A.F.E. center in Sun Valley, which takes e-waste free from City and County residents on Saturdays and Sundays between 9 a.m. and 3 p.m., within the 125 pound or 15 gallon per-visit limit.

The last category is whatever was standing beside the appliance. In a NoHo parking bay or storage cage that is usually chemical: detergents and solvents, automotive fluids, half a can of paint, a propane cylinder for a patio heater, a box of dead batteries. LASAN refuses all of it at the curb. It belongs at a S.A.F.E. center or, for architectural paint, at a free PaintCare drop-off point funded by the recovery fee already paid at purchase. We separate it at your address and tell you exactly what is going where before anything is loaded.

What usually goes
with an appliance

Disconnected, carried and separated in one visit, on one quoted number.

NoHo appliance
questions

Refrigerant, commercial units, stairs and where the material actually goes.

Will the city take my old refrigerator?

A household one from a building under five units, yes — LA Sanitation's bulky pickup is free and unlimited, booked at least one business day ahead, and collected at the curb on your trash day. Commercial appliances are refused outright, and buildings of five or more units are recycLA customers rather than residential bulky customers. And in every case it is a curbside collection, so the stair from a second-floor kitchen is not included.

Why can a fridge not just go in a normal load?

Because of the sealed refrigeration circuit. Refrigerators, freezers, air conditioners, dehumidifiers and wine coolers hold refrigerant and compressor oil that must be recovered by somebody equipped to do it before the metal can be processed. Crushing a charged unit vents it. We route those to a recycler set up for recovery, which is a short haul from North Hollywood, and we tell you that is what is happening when we quote.

Can you disconnect the washer and the gas dryer?

We handle standard water supply and drain connections and standard electrical work as part of the job, and we will close and cap a sound gas shutoff. If a gas connection is perished, corroded or has been modified, the honest answer is a licensed plumber first and us second. The same applies to an undrained water heater, which in a walk-up is a flood risk to the apartment below rather than just a heavy lift.

It is on the second floor with an outside stair. Is that a problem?

No, it is the standard NoHo job. Doors come off the unit in the room, the treads and rail get protected, and it is walked down with the right number of people rather than the minimum. Tell us the floor and whether there is a landing turn when you book, because that decides the crew size, and tell us if the block is permit parked so we send a vehicle that can take a legal position.

Is a microwave really e-waste?

Yes. Microwaves sit in California's universal waste category alongside televisions, monitors, computers, printers, phones and batteries, all banned from household trash since the state's exemption ended in February 2006. We separate them and route them to a certified handler, or to the Randall Street S.A.F.E. center in Sun Valley, which takes e-waste free at weekends between 9 a.m. and 3 p.m.

Can you take the old unit when the new one is delivered?

Yes, and in a managed building it is the tidiest arrangement, because nothing sits in a walkway overnight. We will get a certificate of insurance on file if the manager wants one, agree a service entrance and a window, and time our visit to your delivery slot. Give us the slot when you book and we will work to it.
