In short

Burbank adds a $12.14 handling fee to collect an appliance and charges it to the property's Burbank Water and Power account, which only the account holder can schedule against, so tenants are stuck. Los Angeles Junk Removal & Hauling removes the unit indoors with the refrigerant circuit sealed, no utility account required.

Burbank charges a special handling fee to collect an appliance, and bills it in a way that catches renters out. The city's bulky item program applies a $12.14 per-item special handling fee, in force since July 1, 2025, to air conditioners, air compressors, dishwashers, drinking fountains, freezers, refrigerators, stoves, washers and dryers, water heaters and softeners, among others. That fee is applied to the Burbank Water and Power account, and the city states that you must be the BWP account holder to schedule pickup of those items — so a tenant whose landlord holds the utility account cannot book it themselves. The city also requires refrigerators to be emptied with the doors removed, items placed out no earlier than the night before collection and at least five feet from fixed objects, and if the crew cannot lift the unit on the day it is tagged and collected the following Friday. Los Angeles Junk Removal & Hauling disconnects the unit, carries it out of the room it is actually in, keeps the sealed refrigerant circuit intact, and needs no utility account to do any of it. The quote is free and upfront.

Appliance calls in Burbank tend to arrive with a wrinkle attached. Either the appliance is upstairs, or it is still plumbed, or the person who needs it gone is not the person whose name is on the Burbank Water and Power bill, and it is the last one that most often stops the free route dead.

This page covers all three. What we clear across the city is on junk removal in Burbank, and the county-wide service is on appliance removal.

The fee, the account and the rules

$12.14 an item
on a bill you may not hold.

Burbank's bulky item program divides items into two lists, and appliances sit almost entirely on the fee side. Collected with a $12.14 special handling fee per item, in force since July 1, 2025: air conditioners, air compressors, dishwashers, drinking fountains, freezers, gas chainsaws, lawnmowers, gas leaf blowers, mattresses and box springs, refrigerators emptied with the doors removed, stoves, tires, washers and dryers, and water heaters and softeners, with a cap of four tires. The city's stated reason for the fee is that it puts the added costs incurred during pickup of these items onto the customer requesting the service rather than onto all rate payers, which is a defensible position and worth knowing about rather than being surprised by.

The billing mechanism is the part that catches people. The fee is applied to the Burbank Water and Power account, and Burbank states that you must be the BWP account holder to schedule pickup of these items. In a city with a substantial rental stock, particularly around the Media District, that means a tenant with a dead refrigerator frequently cannot book the free-at-the-curb route at all without involving their landlord or property manager. It is not a hurdle anybody mentions until you hit it.

The operational rules are the same as for any bulky item and they matter more with an appliance. Schedule through the Our Burbank 311 portal at least two business days ahead with a photograph, or by calling (818) 238-3800 Monday to Friday between 7:30 a.m. and 4:00 p.m. at least one business day ahead. Put nothing out before the night before your trash day. Keep items at least five feet from fixed objects. Remove the doors from refrigerators. And if the crew cannot lift it because of weight or size, the item is tagged and collected on the Friday following your trash day.

Two more Burbank specifics. Anything pertaining to a business operation is excluded outright: the city states that sofas from a furniture store, refrigerators from a restaurant and washing machines from a laundromat do not qualify for bulky pickup, and suggests donating, renting a temporary dumpster, or calling a junk removal service. And for the small electrical fraction, the Burbank Recycle Center Drop Zone at 500 South Flower Street takes computers, laptops, televisions, monitors, wires and power strips from residents Monday to Friday 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., with proof of Burbank residency sometimes requested.

Getting the unit out

Strapped, plumbed, vented
and usually in the wrong room.

The first question on any appliance job is what it is connected to, not what it weighs. A gas stove and a gas dryer need the supply shut and capped properly rather than pulled and left hanging. A dishwasher is plumbed and hard-wired under a fixed countertop. A water heater is seismically strapped, plumbed, vented, and frequently still full — and a full fifty-gallon tank is a wholly different lift from a drained one. Telling us the connections on the phone decides whether this is a one-visit job.

The second is the room. Burbank's single-family stock commonly puts the laundry in the garage and the water heater in a garage alcove, which is the easy version: short carry, hard floor, truck on the driveway. The denser Media District stock puts the laundry in a closet off a hallway upstairs, with a door narrower than the machine and an external stair with a shallow landing. The hillside blocks above Glenoaks add a stepped approach from the street, which is the single biggest factor in how long an appliance takes to move.

Third, the Rancho equestrian district. Deep lots with outbuildings, stables and tack rooms mean the appliance is often a long way from anywhere a truck can stand, and several of those streets carry designated horse trails alongside the roadway, so a vehicle parked carelessly is a genuine problem rather than a discourtesy. Smaller vehicle, more trips, parked properly.

Fourth, the commercial side. Burbank's studio-adjacent light industrial and Media District commercial stock generates a steady flow of appliances from break rooms, commissaries, post facilities and restaurants, and those are excluded from the city program by name. Commercial jobs bring their own layer: a dock with hours, a service elevator with a booking, a property manager who wants a certificate of insurance. Tell us the building requirements at the quote stage and the job happens once.

Fifth, condition. Appliances kept in an unheated Burbank garage for years frequently have a rusted base pan or a seized drum, which changes how the unit can be strapped and lifted rather than whether it can. If the appliance is one item in a bigger clearance, see garage cleanouts in Burbank.

Tell us the appliance, whether it is still connected, and who the account holder is.

Where an appliance ends up

Refrigerant, oil, metal, board.
In that order.

An appliance is dismantled in a fixed sequence and none of it happens at your address. First, refrigerant. Any sealed circuit — refrigerator, freezer, window or portable air conditioner, dehumidifier, wine cooler — holds a charge that has to be recovered by a certified technician with recovery equipment before the shell can be shredded. That is why the most useful thing a hauler does with a refrigerator is keep the circuit intact in transit. A unit dragged on its side with the line set snagged has already vented, and nothing after that undoes it.

Second, compressor oil, drained and handled separately. Third, the metal, which is most of the weight and most of the value: steel cabinet, aluminum and copper in the coil and motor windings. Metal appliances are one of the four categories Burbank names as exceptions to its own statement that bulky items go to landfill, which is exactly because that metal stream exists.

Fourth, plastics and the foam insulation layer, which is why a refrigerator cannot simply be baled with scrap. Fifth, the universal waste fraction: control boards, displays, mercury switches in older chest freezers and dryer doors, and the batteries in anything with a memory. California ended the household exemption for universal waste on February 9, 2006, banning household batteries, cell phones, computers, fluorescent lamps, mercury switches and thermostats, printers, microwaves, televisions and monitors from the trash outright.

Burbank residents have a decent free route for that last fraction but it is narrower than people assume. The Recycle Center Drop Zone on South Flower Street takes computers, laptops, televisions, monitors, wires and power strips, batteries, e-bikes and hoverboards, lightbulbs and tubes at ten tubes per resident per year, and toner and inkjet cartridges, Monday to Friday 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. It does not take paint, chemicals or medical waste, and the city has concluded its motor oil and oil filter collection, so the Recycle Center no longer accepts either. For those, Burbank residents use the county route: the Randall Street S.A.F.E. Center at 11025 Randall Street in Sun Valley, open Saturday and Sunday 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.

Burbank appliance
questions

The fee, the utility account, disconnection and where the unit ends up.

How much does Burbank charge to take a refrigerator?

A $12.14 special handling fee per item, in force since July 1, 2025, applied to the Burbank Water and Power account. The same fee covers freezers, washers, dryers, stoves, dishwashers, air conditioners, water heaters and softeners, among others. The city's stated reason is to put the added costs of these pickups onto the customer requesting them rather than onto all rate payers. The unit must be emptied with the doors removed and placed out no earlier than the night before collection.

I rent, and the utility account is in my landlord's name. Can I book it?

Not for a fee item. Burbank states that you must be the Burbank Water and Power account holder to schedule pickup of the special handling fee items, which includes every major appliance. So a tenant whose landlord holds the account has to go through them. That is the single most common reason Burbank renters call us instead: we do not need a utility account, we take it out of the unit rather than from the curb, and the quote is free and upfront.

Do you disconnect the appliance?

Yes, and we would rather do it than arrive to find it half done. A gas stove or gas dryer needs the supply shut and capped properly. A dishwasher is plumbed and hard-wired under a fixed counter. A water heater is strapped, plumbed, vented and often still full, and a full fifty-gallon tank is a different job from a drained one. Tell us the connections when you book so the right crew and tools arrive on the first visit.

Our restaurant needs a walk-in and a range removed. Is that the same service?

It is our service, but not the city's. Burbank excludes items pertaining to a business operation from bulky pickup by name, using restaurant refrigerators and laundromat washing machines as its examples, and suggests donating, renting a temporary dumpster, or calling a junk removal service. For a commercial job tell us the loading arrangement, whether there is a dock or a service elevator, whether the building needs a certificate of insurance and what hours the work can happen in.

Where do I take an old microwave or a TV?

The Burbank Recycle Center Drop Zone at 500 South Flower Street takes computers, laptops, televisions, monitors, wires and power strips, batteries, e-bikes and hoverboards, and lightbulbs and tubes at ten tubes per resident per year, Monday to Friday 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Proof of Burbank residency may be asked for. Note that it does not take paint, chemicals or medical waste, and the city has ended its motor oil and filter collection, so those go to the Randall Street S.A.F.E. Center in Sun Valley at the weekend.

Should I take the doors off the fridge before you come?

The city requires it for a curbside collection, but you do not need to for us and we would rather you did not. A refrigerator that travels intact keeps its sealed refrigerant circuit intact, and that charge is recovered by a certified technician at the processor rather than vented in a driveway. If the unit is going to stand outside for days awaiting a city collection, that is a genuine child-safety issue and the city's rule makes sense. For a same-visit removal, leave it whole.
