Getting rid of an old refrigerator in LA,
and who takes it free

A refrigerator is not furniture. Until a certified technician has recovered the refrigerant, state and federal law treat it as a hazardous item, and that single fact decides every route open to you.

The short answer

In Los Angeles the free routes are retailer haul-away when a new fridge is delivered, and your city's bulky pickup: Long Beach, Santa Monica, Glendale and Burbank all collect refrigerators. LA Sanitation's list names only commercial appliances as prohibited, so itemize yours when you book. Remove the door first.

Everything awkward about a refrigerator sits in the sealed loop at the back: refrigerant, and the compressor oil holding more of it in solution. Under Section 608 of the Clean Air Act it is illegal to vent that while disposing of the appliance, and in California only two kinds of certified person may take it out. That is why one city charges a handling fee for an item it collects free otherwise, and why a landfill bills a fridge as a recycle item, not by the ton.

Refuse is a local service, so every city wrote its own appliance rule and they do not agree. One will not list a unit that still holds refrigerant. One bills $12.14. Several take it free, but only on a separate truck. Underneath sits one set of rules that does not vary.

The fact that decides everything

Why a fridge is not just a heavy cupboard

California calls a refrigerator a major appliance, alongside washers, dryers, water heaters, stoves, freezers and air conditioners. California's Department of Toxic Substances Control calls the dangerous parts inside them “materials that require special handling.” In a fridge that means four: refrigerant (CFCs and HCFCs in older units, HFCs in most of what is thrown out now), the compressor oil carrying dissolved refrigerant, mercury in switches, and metal-encased capacitors that may hold PCBs or DEHP. Whoever takes it has to be set up for all four, which is why the route matters.

The federal ruleClean Air Act Section 608, 40 CFR Part 82 Subpart F. Intentionally venting ozone-depleting refrigerants or their substitutes during disposal is banned.
The only permitted releasesThree: de minimis amounts during a good-faith attempt to recapture, emissions during normal operation, and substitutes EPA has exempted, now including isobutane (R-600a) in home refrigerators.
Who may legally open it upThe refrigerant, only a technician certified under 40 CFR 82.161. Everything else, only a DTSC Certified Appliance Recycler. Health and Safety Code 25211.1.
Landfill banThose materials may not go to a solid waste facility, and must be out before the appliance is crushed, baled or shredded. Health and Safety Code 25212(a).
The paper trailEPA holds the final disposer responsible for recovery. Where someone else did it, a signed statement giving their name, address and the date is required.

Free first

The free routes, in the order to try them

Free refrigerator pickup exists across most of the county. It is just never advertised as such, and never same-week. EPA orders it the same way: electric utility first, then your city.

  1. 1

Ask for haul-away when you order the new one

EPA notes that some retailers offer appliance pick-up and disposal with the purchase and delivery of a new unit. Settle it when you order.

  2. 2

Work out which city collects your trash

Not the one on your mail. Studio City, Venice and San Pedro are City of Los Angeles; West Hollywood and Beverly Hills are not. Our bulky pickup guide compares the programs.

  3. 3

Book the pickup and name the fridge

A refrigerator usually rides a different truck from a couch, so a request that just says “bulky items” comes back with the fridge still standing there.

  4. 4

    Take the door off first

Long Beach and Glendale want doors removed or taped shut; Burbank wants the unit empty. Where a city is silent, California Penal Code 402b is not.

  5. 5

Otherwise drive it to an appliance recycler

A landfill or transfer station takes a fridge as a recycle item at a per-appliance rate. A scrap yard may only take one if it is itself a Certified Appliance Recycler.

One question, six answers

What each city does with a refrigerator

Every row is from the city's own page. The largest program in the county does not name residential appliances either way: LA Sanitation lists what it will take and what it cannot take at the curb, and appliances appear once, in the prohibited list, as commercial appliances. Itemize yours when you book.

City of Los AngelesFree, unlimited curbside bulky collection on your regular trash day, requested at least one business day ahead online, on MyLA311 or on 1-800-773-2489. Commercial appliances are prohibited.
Long Beach12 free special collections a year per city-serviced account, on (562) 570-2876. Refrigerators and freezers must have doors removed or taped shut and ride a separate truck, apart from other items. A regulatory fee may apply to special-handling items.
GlendaleRefrigerators are on the accepted list, with the instruction “remove door or tape closed.” Freezers must be small ones. Three working days' notice, homes of one to four units only.
BurbankCollected on your regular trash day, but a $12.14 special handling fee per item applies to refrigerators, which must be empty with doors off. The fee began July 1, 2025 and goes on the Burbank Water and Power account, so the account holder must book it.
Santa MonicaBulky collection Monday through Friday, maximum 5 items. Refrigerators and freezers are accepted but collected by a separate truck and may not go out with other items. Normally removed within 7 days, up to 10.
Beverly HillsThe acceptable list reads “refrigerators and AC units without the freon,” so a unit still holding refrigerant is not on it. Free from the alley, $91.86 from the parkway, two items per request.
Anything from a businessBurbank excludes items from a business operation and names restaurant refrigerators; Los Angeles prohibits commercial appliances.

The stale answer everyone repeats

Utility recycling programs, checked today

Search this and you will be told to call your power company for a free pickup and a cash bounty. That was true for years; in Los Angeles it is now true in one city. The federal umbrella has closed too: EPA presents Responsible Appliance Disposal under the heading “RAD Program History (2006–2025),” past tense. RAD recovered the blowing agent from insulation foam, which no rule requires: EPA says it is typically emitted during shredding instead.

EPA Responsible Appliance DisposalClosed. EPA describes it as history covering 2006 to 2025, over which partners processed more than 9 million appliances.
LADWPNo refrigerator recycling or turn-in program. Its Consumer Rebate Program covers cool roofs, windows, HVAC and heat pumps, pool pumps and whole house fans.
Southern California EdisonNo appliance recycling pickup listed. The rebates page offers bill assistance and the SCE Marketplace; the old refrigerator-recycling address now redirects to a home energy guide.
SoCalGasNot applicable. Its residential rebates are for new qualifying natural gas appliances.
Burbank Water and PowerThe exception. Up to $75 back for replacing a refrigerator with an ENERGY STAR model of at least 15 cubic feet, or up to $875 for income-qualified customers where the price does not exceed $1,700. BWP states that customers on or eligible for rate assistance may be able to exchange an old fridge free.

When you have to pay someone

Landfills, transfer stations and scrap yards

Sunshine Canyon in Sylmar publishes a public rate card, a useful benchmark for a self-haul. The appliance line is not a disposal charge: the landfill's footnote says appliances are accepted for recycling only, go to the hazardous waste storage area, are taken off-site by a licensed contractor, and count as bulky items subject to a hard-to-handle charge. That is Health and Safety Code 25212 on a rate card.

The scrap route has its own gate. DTSC states that under Health and Safety Code 25211.2 a discarded major appliance may only be sold to a scrap recycling facility that is itself a Certified Appliance Recycler. This is why the metal buyer who takes your washer may decline your fridge.

Appliances (recycle only)$115 each
Hard-to-handle / bulky waste$275 each plus disposal
MSW, general household waste$120 per ton
Minimum chargeAll materials are charged a one-ton minimum
Environmental fee$19.71 per load
Untarped load penalty$175 per load, citing Vehicle Code 23115
Safety vest and hard hat$12.50 each if you arrive without
Never acceptedHazardous waste and liquids: batteries, paint, used oil, antifreeze
Rates as ofJuly 1, 2024 per the published card

Before it moves

Doors, compressors and staircases

The door rule is criminal, not advisory. Penal Code 402b makes it a misdemeanor to abandon or leave anywhere accessible to children any appliance of one and a half cubic feet or more that is no longer in use and has not had the door removed, or the hinges and enough of the latch mechanism removed to stop the door latching. It reaches the owner or manager who knowingly permits one to sit that way, too. Federal law came at it from the factory end: since 1956, at 15 U.S.C. 1211, a household refrigerator may not be sold unless its door opens from inside.

The compressor matters only if the unit still works. Whirlpool says a refrigerator may travel upright or lying down, but a unit holding the old R-12 refrigerant must then stand upright at least 24 hours before power, and an R-134a unit at least 15 minutes, or the compressor may be damaged. Oil drains out when the cabinet goes over; the wait lets it drain back. If the fridge is dead, lay it down.

  1. 1

    Empty it, freezer included

Burbank requires it, and a fridge unplugged for a day is a bucket of defrosted water waiting for the first stair.

  2. 2

Shut off and disconnect the water line

Ice makers run off a saddle valve or supply stop. Close it, disconnect, drain into a pan. Take the glass shelves out at the same time.

  3. 3

Remove the door or disable the latch

Long Beach and Glendale accept doors taped shut, Burbank asks for them off, and Penal Code 402b requires one or the other.

  4. 4

Then decide whether it is a two-person job

The doors swing, the shell is thin steel over foam, and on a staircase the weight moves.

Being straight about it

When the free pickup is right, and when it is not

Book the city if the fridge is on a ground floor or already in the garage and you can get it to the curb yourself. It costs nothing in Los Angeles, Long Beach, Glendale and Santa Monica, and runs on your normal collection day or inside about a week. In Burbank the $12.14 fee is still the cheapest route. Ask the retailer if a new unit is being delivered: nothing beats the old one leaving on the truck that brought its replacement.

Call someone when the geometry beats the free option. Every program here is curbside, and Long Beach says outright that its crews cannot enter private property. A fridge in a second-floor walk-up, or behind a tenant's leftovers in a garage that also needs clearing, is not a curbside problem. Our appliance removal page covers refrigerant units, and pricing has its own. Otherwise, book the city and keep the money.

Worth knowing

The parts people get wrong

What to know
  1. Clean Air Act Section 608 makes it illegal to intentionally vent the refrigerant from a refrigerator while disposing of it, and EPA holds the final disposer responsible.
  2. In California only a DTSC Certified Appliance Recycler may remove the hazardous components from a major appliance, and only a technician certified under 40 CFR 82.161 may remove the refrigerant.
  3. California Health and Safety Code 25212 bars those materials from a solid waste facility, which is why a landfill takes a refrigerator as a recycle item rather than as trash.
  4. Long Beach, Glendale and Santa Monica collect residential refrigerators free at the curb, Burbank charges a $12.14 handling fee, and Beverly Hills lists only units with the refrigerant already out.
  5. California Penal Code 402b makes it a misdemeanor to abandon an appliance of one and a half cubic feet or more where children can reach it without removing the door or disabling the latch.
  6. EPA's Responsible Appliance Disposal program ran from 2006 to 2025 and is closed, and Burbank Water and Power is the only LA-area utility still running a fridge offer.

Refrigerators, answered

The follow-up questions people ask after this one.

Is there free refrigerator pick up in Los Angeles?

Yes, in most of the county. Long Beach, Glendale and Santa Monica collect residential refrigerators free at the curb, and the City of Los Angeles runs unlimited free bulky collection. Burbank collects them for a $12.14 handling fee. The other free route is retailer haul-away, arranged when you order the new unit.

Will LA Sanitation take my refrigerator?

LA Sanitation's accepted list is furniture, mattresses and box springs, toilets and sinks, rolled carpet, large wood and doors, and e-waste. Appliances appear only in the prohibited list, and only as commercial ones. A residential fridge is in neither, so itemize it when you book on 1-800-773-2489.

Do I have to get the freon out before the city takes it?

In most cities, no. The collector handles recovery, because federal law makes the final disposer responsible. Beverly Hills is the local exception: its acceptable-items list reads refrigerators and AC units without the freon, so a unit still holding refrigerant has to go another way.

Does LADWP or Edison pay you to recycle an old refrigerator?

Not as of September 2026. LADWP's programs list has no appliance recycling or turn-in offer, and SCE's rebates page lists bill assistance and its marketplace only. SoCalGas rebates cover gas appliances only. Burbank Water and Power is the exception, with a replacement rebate and a free exchange for rate-assistance households.

Can I leave an old fridge in the alley or by the dumpster?

No. Setting bulky waste out without a scheduled collection is illegal dumping, and a fridge carries a second offense on top. California Penal Code 402b makes it a misdemeanor to abandon any appliance of one and a half cubic feet or more where children can reach it with the door and latch intact, and it reaches the owner or manager too.

Can I lay a refrigerator on its side to move it?

If it is going for recycling, yes. If you want it working afterwards, Whirlpool's rule applies: a fridge may travel upright or lying down, but an older R-12 unit must then stand upright at least 24 hours before it is plugged in, and an R-134a unit 15 minutes. Ignoring that can damage the compressor.
