Working with Hunter and this company was great. Gave us a quick quote over the phone after sending photos and was able to help us the SAME day. Removal was fast and easy. We definitely recommend going with this company.

Westchester contains all of Los Angeles International Airport, so household and commercial appliances often sit a block apart, and the city's free pickup names commercial appliances as prohibited. Appliance removal here takes the unit out whole, keeps any sealed refrigerant circuit intact for technician recovery, and routes boards and motors as universal waste.
Appliance removal in Westchester splits along a line the City of Los Angeles draws explicitly. Westchester is inside the city, so LA Sanitation's free bulky item pickup applies to a single-family address — but LASAN's published prohibited list names commercial appliances, so an appliance coming out of a business is not part of the free curbside program even when it is standing on a residential street. That distinction matters more here than almost anywhere else in the city, because Westchester's 10.81 square miles contain all of Los Angeles International Airport and the hotel, catering and office belt that serves it, so household and commercial appliances often sit a block apart. On top of that, anything with a sealed refrigerant circuit — a refrigerator, a freezer, a window air conditioner, a dehumidifier — has to have that circuit recovered by a technician before the metal can be processed, and any control board, motor or display in the unit is universal waste, banned from California trash since the household exemption ended on February 9, 2006. Los Angeles Junk Removal & Hauling takes the unit out whole, keeps the sealed system intact in transit, and routes it to a processor that handles it properly. The quote is free and upfront.
An appliance is the one item in a house that is heavy, awkward, plumbed or wired in, and legally regulated all at the same time. A refrigerator is not a big box of metal. It is a sealed pressure circuit, a compressor full of oil, a foam insulation layer, a control board and about a hundred kilograms of steel, and three of those five things have their own destination.
This page is about how that actually gets handled in Westchester, including the part most haulers do not mention: whether the appliance is coming out of a home or out of a business changes which rules apply. What we clear across the neighborhood is on junk removal in Westchester, and the county-wide service is on appliance removal.
LA Sanitation publishes two lists for its bulky item pickup: what it will gladly take, and what it cannot pick up at the curb for safety and environmental reasons. The accepted list names furniture, mattresses and box springs, toilets and sinks, rolled and tied carpet, large wood pieces and doors, and electronic waste including televisions, computers and monitors. The prohibited list names automotive parts and used oil, construction materials such as concrete, brick and dirt, commercial appliances, paints, solvents and chemicals, medicines and needles, fluorescent lights, and cardboard outside a scheduled Move In / Move Out service.
Read those two lists carefully and the operative word for this page is commercial. The city singles out commercial appliances for refusal. So the walk-in cooler from a Sepulveda restaurant, the reach-in from a Century Boulevard hotel kitchen, the stack washer from a laundromat and the catering refrigeration that serves the airport are outside the free curbside program by name, regardless of what street they end up standing on. That is not a technicality in this neighborhood: Westchester is the community that contains LAX, and the commercial belt along Century, Sepulveda and Airport Boulevard is part of the same 90045 that the residential tracts sit in.
For an actual household appliance at a single-family Westchester address, the free route is real and we will point you at it. Bulky pickup is unlimited, costs nothing, needs at least one business day of notice through the online form, MyLA311 or the 24-hour Customer Care Center on 1-800-773-2489, and happens on your regular trash day. Have an itemized list ready so the right truck is sent. If your dead dryer can be walked to the parkway and you can wait for your collection day, that is a legitimate answer and it costs you nothing.
Where it stops being a free problem: the unit is in a second-floor laundry closet, the water heater is strapped into a garage alcove and still plumbed, the refrigerator is built into a cabinet run, the stack washer will not come down the stairs whole, or the unit belongs to a business. Those are the jobs we do. And underneath all of them sits the fraction that never goes to the curb at any address: the batteries, the control boards, the fluorescent tubes in an old appliance bay, and the refrigerant itself.

The postwar tract plan puts appliances in awkward places by modern standards. The laundry is often in a closet off a hallway or in the detached garage rather than in a dedicated utility room, the water heater is in a garage alcove with a seismic strap around it and a flue above it, and the kitchen was laid out when a refrigerator was a third smaller than it is now. Add a later remodel and you get the common Westchester situation: a modern counter-depth refrigerator installed into a cabinet opening that was cut to fit it, with the cabinet now sitting proud of the appliance on both sides.
So the first question is never how heavy it is. It is what it is connected to. A gas stove and a gas dryer need the supply shut and capped properly, not pulled and left. A dishwasher is plumbed and hard-wired. A water heater is strapped, plumbed, vented and often full, and a full 50-gallon tank weighs a great deal more than the same tank drained. We ask what the connections are before we come, because that determines whether the job is a two-person lift or a lift plus a disconnection, and we would rather tell you that on the phone than discover it in your garage.
The second is the route. A second-floor addition with a turning stair is the standard Westchester obstacle for a stack washer and dryer, and the binding constraint is usually headroom at the turn rather than stair width. A detached garage laundry, on the other hand, is the easiest version of this job in the city: the alley is right there and the unit never enters the house at all.
The third is the airport. Century, Sepulveda, La Tijera, Manchester and Lincoln carry LAX traffic through the middle of the neighborhood, and an appliance job at a commercial address in the airport belt has its own layer on top of that: a loading dock with hours, a service elevator with a booking, a property manager who wants a certificate of insurance, and in some buildings a restriction on when a large vehicle can stand. Tell us the building requirements when you book and the job happens once. Do not, and it happens twice.
Fourth, the coastal air. Westchester sits on the bluff with marine air moving across it, and appliances stored in unheated detached garages here corrode faster than their age suggests. A twelve-year-old washer that has sat in a Westchester garage for three years is frequently worse inside than out, which matters because a rusted-through base pan or a seized drum changes how the unit has to be moved rather than whether it can be. If the appliance is one item in a wider clearance, see garage cleanouts in Westchester.
Tell us what the appliance is, whether it is sealed and where it sits. That is the quote.
Free upfront quote, no obligation. One number, agreed before anything is lifted.

Our own crews on Los Angeles County jobs. The appliance removal we run in Westchester looks like this too: side yards, narrow walkways and the back of the property is where the work actually is.
An appliance is dismantled in a specific order and none of it happens at your house. First, refrigerant. Any unit with a sealed circuit — refrigerator, freezer, window or portable air conditioner, dehumidifier, wine cooler — holds a charge that has to be recovered by a certified technician using recovery equipment before the shell can be shredded. That is why the single most important thing a hauler can do with a refrigerator is keep the circuit intact in transit. A unit dragged on its side with the line set snagged is a unit that has vented, and nothing downstream fixes that.
Second, the compressor oil. It is drained and handled separately, not with the metal. Third, the metal itself, which is the bulk of the value and the bulk of the weight: steel cabinet, aluminum and copper in the coil and the motor windings. Fourth, the plastics and the foam insulation layer, which is why a refrigerator cannot simply be baled.
Fifth is the fraction that makes an appliance universal waste rather than scrap. Control boards, displays, mercury switches in older chest freezers and dryer doors, and the batteries in anything with a memory are all covered by California's universal waste rules. The state's household exemption ended on February 9, 2006, which banned household batteries, cell phones, computers, fluorescent lamps, mercury switches and thermostats, printers, microwaves, televisions and monitors from the trash outright. A microwave is not a grey area: it is named. The free public route for that fraction is a S.A.F.E. center, Hyperion being the closest to Westchester, open Saturday and Sunday 9 a.m. to 3 p.m., within the state limit of 125 pounds or 15 gallons per visit.
Two things that never ride with an appliance load: a propane cylinder from a patio setup, which goes to S.A.F.E. as its own item, and anything from a demolition around the appliance. If the counter or the cabinet run comes out with the refrigerator, that is construction and demolition debris, and in the City of Los Angeles mixed C&D has to be hauled by a permitted private hauler to a City-certified processing facility, with a penalty of up to $5,000 per load taken anywhere else. We keep those loads apart on purpose.

Same rule in Westchester as anywhere else in Los Angeles County. The local part is the program above, not the disposal law. Full detail on appliance removal.

The household and commercial line, refrigerant, stairs and what the city will not take.
For a household appliance at a single-family address, LA Sanitation's bulky item pickup is free and unlimited and you book it at least one business day ahead on 1-800-773-2489, through MyLA311 or on the online form. What the city names on its prohibited list is commercial appliances, so anything out of a business is excluded by name. The other limit is the same one as always: it is a curbside service, so the unit has to reach the curb under its own steam or somebody else's.
Yes, and it is worth being clear about. LA Sanitation explicitly prohibits commercial appliances from curbside bulky collection, so a reach-in, a walk-in panel, a commercial range or a stack laundry from a business is not part of the free residential program. That is our work rather than the city's. Tell us the address, what the unit is, whether there is a dock or a service elevator, and whether the building needs a certificate of insurance, and we will quote it free upfront.
We do not need you to, and we would rather you did not. A refrigerator that travels intact keeps its sealed refrigerant circuit intact, which is the thing that actually matters environmentally, and the charge is recovered by a certified technician at the processor rather than in your driveway. If the unit is going to sit outside for any length of time before we arrive, that is a child-safety question and worth a conversation, but for a same-visit removal the right answer is to leave it whole and let us carry it.
Yes, and it is one of the more common Westchester calls because the tract plan puts them in garage alcoves. What we need to know first is whether it is still plumbed and gassed, whether it has been drained, and whether it is strapped, because a full fifty-gallon tank is a completely different lift from an empty one. If it is still live we handle the disconnection properly rather than pulling it. Tell us at the quote stage so the right crew and the right tools turn up the first time.
It is, and it is named specifically. California ended the household exemption for universal waste on February 9, 2006, and the list includes household batteries, cell phones, computers, fluorescent lamps, mercury switches and thermostats, printers, microwaves, televisions and monitors. So a microwave cannot legally go in the trash. LA Sanitation does take e-waste including televisions, computers and monitors at the curb under the bulky program, and the S.A.F.E. centers take the whole category free at weekends.
Yes, but they travel as a separate load and it is worth knowing why. Cabinetry, countertop, tile and partition material are construction and demolition debris, and in the City of Los Angeles mixed C&D has to be taken by a permitted private hauler to a City-certified processing facility, with a penalty of up to $5,000 per load for anything taken elsewhere. Keeping that fraction separate from an appliance load is not fussiness, it is the compliance chain. We quote both parts together so there are no surprises.
