In short

Playa del Rey is part of the City of Los Angeles, so LA Sanitation collects bulky items from Playa del Rey addresses free and with no annual cap, curbside, on your regular trash day. Playa del Rey also happens to host the Hyperion S.A.F.E. Collection Center at 7660 W Imperial Hwy Gate B, open Saturday and Sunday 9 to 3, which takes paint, solvents, automotive fluids, batteries, propane cylinders and e-waste free from any LA City or LA County resident, up to 125 pounds or 15 gallons per visit. Between those two, a lot of a Playa del Rey clear-out can be handled for nothing. We take the rest.

We tell Playa del Rey callers the free options first because they are genuinely strong here. If your load is a couch at the curb, LASAN will take it. If it is four cans of old paint and a car battery, drive it to Hyperion this weekend and pay nothing. If it is a garage packed to the door, a hot tub on the deck, a tenant's whole unit, or debris from a remodel, none of the free channels apply and you need a truck and a crew.

That is our half of it, quoted as one flat number by volume, with the sorting and the disposal routing included. See how our pricing works.

The free options first

Two free channels,
and both are useful here.

LA Sanitation's bulky item pickup is free and unlimited for single-family residents in the City of LA, booked through MyLA311, the online form, or 1-800-773-2489, and collected on your regular trash day with at least one business day's notice. It takes furniture, mattresses, carpet, doors, large wood and e-waste including TVs and monitors. It refuses construction materials, paint and solvents, automotive parts and used oil, commercial appliances, and fluorescent tubes.

Everything on that refusal list, except the construction debris, is exactly what the S.A.F.E. Center down the road exists for. Hyperion is one of seven permanent S.A.F.E. Centers in the county, it is free, no appointment is needed, and it accepts aerosols, automotive fluids, cleaners and solvents, e-waste, household batteries, paint and thinner, pool chemicals, fluorescent bulbs, mercury items, pesticides, propane cylinders, sharps and medications. The 125-pound or 15-gallon cap is a California transportation limit, not a city rule, so it applies wherever you go. Explosives, radioactive material and medical waste are not accepted anywhere in the program, and business waste needs the paid Very Small Quantity Generator route.

On the ground

Bluff stairs, sand
and a single road in.

Playa del Rey splits into two very different hauling problems. Up on the bluff the houses are built into the slope off Vista del Mar and Montreal Street, which means long exterior stair runs, garages at street level with living space below, and streets too narrow to turn a large truck. Down on the flats near the lagoon and along Culver the buildings are small apartment blocks and beach duplexes with rear alley access and permit parking.

The bluff jobs are carries, not volume. A washer out of a lower level goes up a flight and around a landing. We bring the hands for that and we say so in the quote rather than discovering it on arrival. On the flats the constraint is parking and the alley, so we work fast and clear the space.

Sea air is the other local reality. Metal patio furniture, barbecues, tools and bikes corrode here in a way they do not five miles inland, so a lot of what comes out of a Playa del Rey garage is rusted past donation and has to be separated for scrap metal recycling rather than dropped whole.

Where it goes

The disposal chain
for a Playa del Rey load.

We donate what is usable, recycle scrap metal rather than landfill it, and send mattresses into California's state-funded mattress recycling program. Electronics have been banned from the California waste stream since the state's universal waste exemption ended in February 2006, so TVs, CRT monitors, printers, microwaves and batteries go to a certified handler or straight down the road to Hyperion. Household hazardous material follows the same route. Remodel debris goes to a City-certified mixed construction and demolition processing facility, which the City of Los Angeles requires by ordinance for any C&D waste generated in the city, with penalties for loads taken anywhere else.

Playa del Rey
questions

Mostly about what the S.A.F.E. Center will and won't take.

Where is the S.A.F.E. Center in Playa del Rey and what does it cost?

Hyperion S.A.F.E. Collection Center, 7660 W Imperial Hwy Gate B, Playa del Rey 90293. It is open Saturday and Sunday 9am to 3pm, needs no appointment, and it is free to City of Los Angeles and LA County residents.

How much can I bring to Hyperion in one visit?

125 pounds or 15 gallons. That is a California state limit on transporting household hazardous waste, not a Hyperion rule, so it applies at every S.A.F.E. Center. If you have more than that, it takes multiple visits or a hauler.

Can I put paint or old motor oil out for LA Sanitation bulky pickup?

No. Paint, solvents, chemicals, automotive parts and used oil are all on LASAN's prohibited list. Those go to a S.A.F.E. Center, and Hyperion is in Playa del Rey. Everything else in a normal household load we can haul for you.

Do you handle appliances with freon in Playa del Rey?

Yes. Refrigerators, freezers and AC units contain refrigerant and are treated as universal waste, so they cannot go in a dumpster or be dropped at a landfill untreated. See appliance removal.

Can you get a truck up to a bluff house?

We look at it before we quote. Many Vista del Mar and Montreal Street properties have narrow frontage and long stair runs, so we stage the truck where it fits and carry from there. The carry is priced into the flat number upfront.
