In short

Mar Vista is part of the City of Los Angeles, so LA Sanitation collects bulky items from Mar Vista addresses free, with no annual limit, from the curb on your regular trash day. What it will not do is empty a detached garage, take demolition debris from an ADU conversion, remove anything from inside the house, or haul soil and concrete. Those four are the bulk of what we get called for in Mar Vista, and they are all excluded from the free program by rule rather than by luck.

Mar Vista is a neighborhood of small post-war houses on generous lots, which produces a very specific junk problem: detached garages and rear yards that have absorbed decades of storage. Then the ADU boom arrived and half those garages became living space, which meant everything inside had to go somewhere and the conversion produced its own debris.

We do both halves. A garage cleanout where we sort, donate and sweep the slab, and the construction debris removal after the framing and drywall. One flat number by volume, quoted on site. See how our pricing works.

The free option first

LASAN takes a lot free.
Just not from your garage.

LA Sanitation's bulky item pickup is genuinely good and genuinely free. Their own wording is unlimited curbside service at no additional charge. You book it on MyLA311, the online form, or the 24-hour line at 1-800-773-2489, they ask for an itemised list, and they collect on your regular trash day with at least one business day's notice. Furniture, mattresses and box springs, toilets and sinks, rolled and tied carpet, large wood pieces and doors, and e-waste including TVs, computers and monitors all go.

The prohibited list is where Mar Vista jobs fall over. No automotive parts or used oil, which rules out most of what is on a garage shelf. No construction materials, so no concrete, brick, dirt, drywall or tile. No commercial appliances. No paint, solvents or chemicals. No fluorescent tubes. And nothing that is not already at the curb, which means the free service assumes you will empty the garage yourself and stack it on the parkway. If you are willing and able to do that, do it and save the money. If you are not, that is the job.

LASAN also runs free monthly Saturday drop-off events from 8am to 4:30pm at five sites, including 2027 Stoner Ave in West LA, which is the closest one to Mar Vista. The remaining 2026 dates are September 19, October 10, November 21 and December 12.

On the ground

Detached garages,
long driveways, narrow gates.

The classic Mar Vista layout is a small house at the front of the lot, a long driveway down one side, and a detached garage at the back. That is good news and bad news. Good, because we can back a truck partway down and cut the carry. Bad, because those driveways are narrow, often flanked by a fence and a wall, and the side gates between the yard and the drive are frequently under three feet wide. Anything wider than that comes apart before it moves.

Up on the Mar Vista hill the streets get steeper and the houses sit above or below grade, so add a stair run to the carry. Along Venice and Washington the stock shifts to duplexes and small apartment buildings with alley bins and permit parking, which is a different job again: quicker access, tighter time on the street.

Yards here are the other constant. Big lots mean mature trees, hedges and lawns being replaced with drought planting, and that generates real weight. Sod, soil, palm fronds and brush are priced by weight rather than volume for a reason. See yard waste removal.

Where it goes

The disposal chain
for a Mar Vista load.

We sort on site. Usable furniture, tools and household goods go to donation. Scrap metal is recycled. Mattresses go into California's state-funded mattress recycling program. Electronics are universal waste under California law and go to a certified handler or a S.A.F.E. Center, with Hyperion in Playa del Rey and the UCLA center in Westwood both close. Paint goes through PaintCare, which operates over 800 free California drop-off locations. Green waste is composted or processed rather than landfilled. And ADU or remodel debris goes to a City-certified mixed C&D processing facility, which is a legal requirement in the City of Los Angeles, not a preference.

  2. LA Sanitation will not take automotive parts, used oil, concrete, dirt, drywall, paint or solvents from a Mar Vista curb.
  3. The nearest LASAN free monthly drop-off site to Mar Vista is 2027 Stoner Ave in West LA, open Saturdays 8am to 4:30pm on scheduled dates.
  4. Construction and demolition debris generated in the City of Los Angeles must be hauled to a City-certified processing facility.
  5. Yard waste from Mar Vista lots is priced by weight, not volume, because soil and sod are dense.

We are on these streets constantly because we are already next door: Santa Monica, Venice, Palms, Culver City, West LA. If your job straddles two of them it is still one visit and one number. The full list is on areas we serve.

Mar Vista
questions

Garages and ADUs come up on most calls here.

Will LA Sanitation empty my Mar Vista garage?

No. The free bulky pickup is curbside only. If you carry everything out to the parkway yourself and none of it is on the prohibited list, they will take it. If you want the garage emptied, sorted and swept, that is a hauling job. See garage cleanouts.

Can you haul debris from an ADU or garage conversion?

Yes, and you cannot put it at the curb. Construction materials are prohibited on LASAN bulky pickup, and in the City of Los Angeles mixed C&D debris has to be taken by a permitted hauler to a City-certified processing facility. See construction debris removal.

What about old paint and motor oil from the garage shelf?

Those cannot go in the trash or at the curb. Paint goes to a PaintCare drop-off free, and automotive fluids go to a S.A.F.E. Center. The two nearest to Mar Vista are Hyperion in Playa del Rey and the UCLA center in Westwood.

Do you take soil, sod and brush from a Mar Vista yard?

Yes. Green waste and soil are priced by weight because they are dense, and it is usually cheaper than people expect for brush and much heavier than people expect for soil. See yard waste removal.

How fast can you get to Mar Vista?

Usually same day. We are open Monday to Saturday 24 hours and Sunday 1pm to 10pm, and Mar Vista is central to our Westside runs. Call or text (323) 230-0777.
