Yard waste removal
across Los Angeles.

Brush clearance, palm fronds, branches, sod, soil and storm debris. Green waste is its own stream and it is heavy, so we price it by weight and quote it flat before we start.

In short We haul yard waste anywhere in greater Los Angeles — brush clearance, palm fronds, tree branches, hedge and shrub removal, sod, soil, rock, gravel and storm debris. Green waste is its own disposal stream and it is heavy and wet, so a yard load is priced by weight rather than by how tall the pile looks. We load it, tarp it, and get it to the scale before it closes.

A pile of yard waste lies about its size. Cut brush is mostly water, sod is soil with grass on top, and a palm frond takes the room of a bicycle and weighs like a wet carpet. This is not a furniture job with leaves on it, so we quote it the way it is actually charged. By weight, flat, before we start.

Why it is weighed

Green waste is a separate stream

In short Clean green waste is kept apart from mixed trash because it gets processed differently, and disposal sites charge for it by the ton. Sunshine Canyon Landfill in Sylmar applies a one-ton minimum to all materials, so even a light load buys a full ton. Its scales close at 5pm on weekdays and 11am on Saturday, and untarped loads carry a penalty at the gate.

Those three facts shape the job. The one-ton minimum is why a single palm trimming and a half-day of brush clearance cost closer together than you would expect. The scale hours are why a Saturday yard job starts early, and the tarp rule is why our loads go under a cover before they leave your street.

The region also has one fewer scale than it did. Chiquita Canyon Landfill in Castaic stopped accepting waste on 1 January 2025, after a subsurface elevated temperature event, and is now in closure. Any hauler's page still listing Chiquita as an option was written before 2025 and has not been checked since.

The free route, honestly

Every city program caps out

In short The free route in Los Angeles is your green bin plus your city's bulky-item program. LASAN's curbside bulky pickup is free, booked through MyLA311 or 1-800-773-2489, but it is curbside only and takes no construction material. Surrounding cities cap their own programs hard. A brush clearance or a palm trimming passes every one of those caps in a single afternoon.

Read that table as a yard owner. Five items in Santa Monica is one dead shrub and four bundles. Six in Culver City is an afternoon of hedge work. Three cubic yards in Pasadena, with a two-person lift limit, rules out sod and soil entirely. Even Long Beach is counting bundles, and a slope does not come off in bundles. None of which makes those programs bad — if your job is a few tied bundles and you can wait for your trash day, we will tell you so on the phone.

Fire season

Brush clearance is a disposal problem

In short Hillside properties across Los Angeles are inspected for defensible space, and the LAFD runs brush inspections on those parcels every year. The part people underestimate is not the cutting. It is that cleared brush has to physically leave the property, and a green bin does not hold a hillside.

We will not quote you an ordinance number, a deadline or a fine amount. Requirements differ by parcel and they change, and the LAFD Brush Clearance Unit is the only correct source for what applies to your address. What we can describe is the work.

Hillside clearance produces a large volume of light, springy material that compacts badly and has to be carried to a street that is narrow, parked solid and short of anywhere legal to stage a pile. The job is mostly carry: material moved by hand, bundled where it can be, staged by the truck, tarped and gone.

Two practical notes. Book earlier in the season than feels necessary, because every hillside owner in Silver Lake, Los Feliz and the streets above Studio City books at once. And get the cut material off the property rather than stacking it at the back fence, which is the exact thing the inspection is about.

What we haul

The whole yard, in one visit

Palm fronds bulky, fibrous, hard on chippers
Tree branches and limbs already on the ground
Brush and hillside clearance carried and staged
Hedge, shrub and ivy removal roots included
Sod and turf weight job
Soil, rock and gravel weight job
Storm and wind-event debris same or next day
Leaves, clippings and bagged green waste
Dead mowers, blowers and trimmers metal to scrap
Hoses, pots, planters and cracked terracotta
Old fencing, trellis and rotten decking priced as debris

What comes off the load: pesticides, herbicides and weed killer, pool chemicals, fuel, and the old motor oil from the mower. A general hauler transporting household hazardous waste in California is breaking the law, so we set it aside and tell you what it is. The S.A.F.E. Collection Centers take all of it free from City of LA and LA County residents, capped at 125 pounds or 15 gallons per visit — a state transport limit nobody can waive.

Also not green waste: bagged concrete, broken pavers, brick and tile. That is construction debris, and in the City of LA it has to go to a certified processing facility.

How it runs

Cut, carry, tarp, weigh

Photos, then one number

Send pictures of the pile and of the route out to the street. We tell you whether it is a volume job or a weight job and quote it flat. Soil, sod and rock change the answer, so mention them.

Load from where it lies

Nothing needs dragging to the curb. We carry it out, up the slope or through the gate, which on a hillside lot is most of the labor.

Separate as we go

Clean green in one stream, metal to scrap, debris and treated lumber apart from it, hazardous material set aside for you. Mixing those turns a clean green load into an expensive mixed one.

Tarp and beat the scale

The load goes under a cover before it leaves your street and gets weighed in before scales close. Then we rake the ground and go.

Across the city

Yard waste removal near you

Palms and slopes are not evenly distributed in this city. Frond and brush work in Encino, Tarzana and Woodland Hills, hillside clearance above Sherman Oaks and Glendale, sod and soil on flat lots in Torrance and Burbank, and storm cleanup everywhere at once. Full list on the areas we serve page.

Yard jobs rarely stay in the yard. The same visit often takes the collapsing garden shed, the spa nobody has heated in years — see hot tub removal — and the garage the yard tools were supposed to live in. Clearing a whole property for a sale or a probate is an estate cleanout, quoted as one job. Our guide to what junk removal costs in LA explains volume against weight in plain terms.

Diagram of the green waste route under California SB 1383: clean trimmings go for composting or mulch, a contaminated load loses that route, and heavy soil and stumps are weighed at the gate
Clean green goes to compost. Contaminated green does not.

One bag of plastic pots in a green load can reclassify the whole thing as trash at the gate, which is why we sort before we tip.

Yard waste, answered

What people ask before a slope, a palm or a lawn gets loaded onto a truck.

How is yard waste removal priced in Los Angeles?

Green waste is priced by weight rather than by how tall the pile looks, because that is how the disposal site charges us. Fresh cut brush, palm fronds, sod and soil are wet and dense, so a pile that looks like a quarter truck can weigh more than a truck of furniture. You get one flat number before we start, quoted from photos or a walkthrough. See how our pricing works.

Can my green bin handle a brush clearance?

No, and this is the honest answer nobody wants. A green bin is sized for a weekly hedge trim and a bag of clippings, not for a slope stripped of dead brush or a palm that has just been trimmed. One afternoon of clearance produces more material than a household green bin will take in a season, which is why brush jobs get hauled rather than binned.

Will the City of Los Angeles pick up yard waste for free?

LASAN's curbside bulky-item pickup is free and you book it through MyLA311 or 1-800-773-2489, but it is a curbside service on your regular trash day and it will not take construction material. It is a genuinely good option for a few tied bundles left at the curb. It is not an option for a hillside clearance, a stack of palm fronds or a pallet of sod, and nobody from the city comes into your yard to get it.

Do you take palm fronds?

Yes, and we take a lot of them. Fronds are bulky, fibrous and awkward to compact, which is why some haulers quietly leave them behind. We load them whole where we can, cut them down where we have to, and tarp the load, because loose fronds on a freeway are how loads become citations.

Can you remove sod, soil, rock and gravel?

Yes. Treat all four as weight jobs rather than volume jobs. A few pallets of lifted sod or a torn-out gravel bed will hit the truck's weight limit long before it fills the bed, so these are quoted by weight and often loaded in more than one trip. Tell us on the call if there is soil or rock in the pile, because it changes the quote and the truck we bring.

Do you clear brush on a slope?

We haul what has been cut and we cut back overgrowth we can reach safely, but we are haulers rather than a tree service or a licensed arborist. Anything requiring climbing, rigging or a chainsaw in a tree canopy belongs with a tree crew. Once it is on the ground, getting it off the property is our part of the job, and on hillside lots that carry is most of the work.

How fast can you come out after a storm or a wind event?

Usually the same day or the next one. We run crews Monday to Saturday around the clock, and Sunday afternoons and evenings. Storm weeks are the exception to everything else on this page — the whole city calls at once, so book early in the day and expect scales to be busy.

What can't go in a yard waste load?

Pesticides, herbicides, weed killer, pool chemicals, fuel and old motor oil from the mower. A general hauler cannot legally transport household hazardous waste in California, so those come off the load and go to a S.A.F.E. Collection Center, free for City of LA and LA County residents. Bagged concrete, broken pavers and torn-out decking are also not green waste — that is construction debris and it travels under different rules.
