Manhattan Beach residents get six free bulky item pickups a year through WM, the city's franchise hauler, capped at three items per visit, booked 48 hours ahead on (310) 830-7100. That is eighteen items a year, more than most cities allow, but it is curbside only and three items is a low ceiling for any real clear-out. On the walk streets and the Strand there is no truck-accessible curb at all. We hand-carry those loads out to the nearest cross street and price the carry upfront.
Two things make Manhattan Beach unusual. First, the free allowance is generous in visits but tight in items, so a garage or a whole-house clear-out will burn through a year of pickups without finishing. Second, a large share of the city's most valuable housing sits on walk streets and the Strand where no collection vehicle can reach the door.
We are built for the second problem in particular. Long hand-carries, narrow stairs, tight side yards, and loads that have to be broken down before they move. One flat number after we look at the access. See how our pricing works.
Manhattan Beach contracts residential collection to WM. The bulky item program allows six free pickups per year at three items per pickup, which the city describes as eighteen items annually, arranged with 48 hours' notice on (310) 830-7100. Worth knowing: an older city page still quotes three visits and nine items, so if you have read a lower number somewhere it is out of date. Confirm with WM when you book.
Where it works, use it. A single couch, a mattress, a broken barbecue, spaced across the year, costs nothing. Where it does not work is volume and access. Three items will not clear a garage. It will not clear a rental between tenants. It will not take a hot tub or a shed, and it will not take remodel debris. And a walk-street or Strand address has no curbside pickup point, so the item has to be moved to a collection street anyway, which is most of the labor.

The Manhattan Beach walk streets were platted as pedestrian corridors and no truck will ever drive one. A haul from a walk-street house is a repeated carry to the nearest vehicle street, sometimes a hundred yards, sometimes with a stair run at each end. The Strand is the same problem with sand and a bike path added.
Then there is the vertical issue. The Hill Section and the Sand Section are built on lots so narrow that houses go up three and four stories with a single internal stair and a roof deck at the top. Furniture that came in through a window on a crane does not come out down the stairs, and we say so before we start rather than halfway through. Elevators exist in some newer builds and they help enormously when they do.
East Manhattan and the Tree Section are flatter, wider and easier, with real driveways and two-car garages, which is where our garage and estate work concentrates. Parking near the beach is metered and enforced hard, so we work tight windows and do not leave a truck sitting.

Our own crews on Los Angeles County jobs. The junk removal we run in Manhattan Beach looks like this too: side yards, narrow walkways and the back of the property is where the work actually is.
Manhattan Beach loads are high-quality and heavily donatable, so donation comes first and we would rather place a good sofa than tip it. Mattresses go into California's state-funded recycling program, which is paid for by an $18.00 per-unit recycling fee charged at purchase since April 1, 2026 — meaning the recycling is already funded and there is no reason for a mattress to go to a landfill. Electronics go to a certified handler as universal waste. Household hazardous material goes to a S.A.F.E. Center, the nearest being Hyperion in Playa del Rey, weekends 9 to 3, free to LA County residents, capped at 125 pounds or 15 gallons per visit. Remodel debris goes to a certified mixed C&D processor.
We are on these streets constantly because we are already next door: Hermosa Beach, El Segundo, Redondo Beach, Hawthorne, Torrance. If your job straddles two of them it is still one visit and one number. The full list is on areas we serve.

We are a service-area business with no yard or storefront, so there is nothing to drive to — the truck comes to you. The whole list is on areas we serve.
Walk-street carries, three-story stair jobs and Tree Section garages.
Couches, sectionals, mattresses in the same trip, beds, desks and wardrobes carried down rather than dragged.
Recycled through a state-funded program, not dumped. Box springs and futons too.
The whole garage in one visit. We sort, donate what is usable and sweep the slab.
A full property cleared with care, on probate or move-out timelines.
Drained, cut down in sections and carried out through the side gate.
Booked and cleared the same day, most days, across LA County.
Access is the theme here.
Six per year at three items each, which the city describes as eighteen items annually, through WM on (310) 830-7100 with 48 hours' notice. An older city page still says three visits and nine items, so confirm when you book.
Yes. We carry it out to the nearest vehicle-accessible street. That carry is the bulk of the labor so we look at it before quoting and give you one flat number that includes it.
Usually, by breaking it down first. Some pieces genuinely cannot come down a single narrow stair assembled, and we tell you that on the walk-through rather than discovering it mid-job.
Yes, and the city bulky program will not. We drain it, cut it into sections and carry it out through the side yard or the gate. See hot tub removal.
Into California's state-funded mattress recycling program, not a landfill. The recycling is paid for by the state mattress recycling fee of $18.00 per unit charged when a mattress is sold, so there is no cost reason to dump one.
Word for word from Google. Nothing tidied.
