In short

Mid-City is part of the City of Los Angeles, so LA Sanitation collects bulky items free and with no annual cap from a Mid-City curb on your regular trash day, booked via MyLA311 or 1-800-773-2489. What that program does not do is empty a detached garage, clear a duplex, take construction debris, or remove anything from inside a house. In a neighborhood full of long-held family homes and small rental properties, that is most of the actual work. We handle it at one flat volume-based price.

Mid-City has a lot of houses that have been in the same family for decades, and a lot of small rental duplexes and fourplexes that turn over. Those two produce our two main job types here: the multi-generation garage cleanout, and the unit clear-out between tenants.

Both are labor jobs rather than collection jobs. We sort in place, separate donations and hazardous material properly, sweep out, and quote one flat number by volume before we start. See garage cleanouts and how our pricing works.

The free option first

LASAN takes it free.
From the curb, and only the curb.

LA Sanitation's bulky item pickup is genuinely free and genuinely unlimited for single-family residents. Book it on MyLA311, the online form, or the 24-hour Customer Care line at 1-800-773-2489, give them an itemised list so the right truck comes, and put the items at the curb for your regular trash day with at least one business day's notice. Furniture, mattresses and box springs, toilets and sinks, rolled and tied carpet, doors, large wood pieces and e-waste including TVs, computers and monitors are all accepted.

The prohibited list is where Mid-City jobs fall over, because it maps almost exactly onto the contents of an old garage. No automotive parts, no used oil, no construction materials including concrete, brick and dirt, no commercial appliances, no paint, solvents or chemicals, no medicines or needles, no fluorescent tubes. And nothing that is not already at the curb, so the program assumes you will carry everything out and stack it on the parkway yourself.

If you can do that, do it and keep your money. If the garage is full to the door, if there is paint and motor oil at the back, if the tenant left a unit full, or if you need it gone today, that is when to call a hauler.

On the ground

Long driveways,
detached garages, narrow gates.

Mid-City's grid is 1920s to 1940s bungalows and Spanish duplexes on modest lots, with a long driveway down one side and a detached garage at the back. A truck can usually get partway down the drive, which shortens the carry, but the drives are narrow, walled or fenced, and the side gates are often under three feet wide. Anything wider than that comes apart before it moves.

Those back garages are the recurring job. Many have not been fully emptied in thirty or forty years, and there is nearly always paint, thinner, motor oil or old pool chemicals somewhere at the back. Those cannot be tipped with the rest; they get separated and routed to a S.A.F.E. Center. Basements and crawl spaces in the older houses hide more volume than people expect.

Along Venice, Pico and Washington the stock turns to duplexes, fourplexes and small apartment buildings with rear alleys, exterior stairs and no elevators. Those are carry-and-turnover jobs. Parking is permit-controlled in stretches and street cleaning is enforced, so we plan the truck position and keep it moving.

Where it goes

The disposal chain
for a Mid-City load.

We sort before we load. Usable furniture, tools and household goods go to donation. Scrap metal goes to a recycler. Mattresses go into California's state-funded mattress recycling program. Electronics are universal waste in California and go to a certified handler. Paint goes free through PaintCare's network of over 800 California drop-off locations, and automotive fluids, solvents and pool chemicals go to a S.A.F.E. Collection Center, with the Washington Blvd center at 2649 E Washington Blvd the nearest, weekends 9 to 3, free, capped at 125 pounds or 15 gallons per visit. Remodel and demolition debris goes to a City-certified mixed C&D processing facility, which the City of Los Angeles requires by ordinance.

Mid-City
questions

Garages and old paint, mostly.

Will LA Sanitation empty my Mid-City garage?

No. The free bulky pickup is curbside only. If you carry everything out to the parkway yourself and none of it is on the prohibited list, they will take it. Emptying, sorting and sweeping the garage is a hauling job. See garage cleanouts.

What do I do with old paint and motor oil from the garage?

Neither can go in the trash or at the curb. Paint goes free to a PaintCare drop-off, and motor oil and solvents go to a S.A.F.E. Collection Center โ€” 2649 E Washington Blvd is the closest to Mid-City, open weekends 9 to 3. We separate and route them if we are clearing the garage.

Do you clear duplexes and fourplexes between tenants?

Yes, regularly, and we can invoice the owner or management company rather than the tenant. Same-day is usually possible. See commercial junk removal.

Can you take debris from a Mid-City remodel?

Yes, and it cannot go to the curb. Mixed C&D debris generated in the City of Los Angeles has to be hauled to a City-certified processing facility. See construction debris removal.

How much does a Mid-City garage cleanout cost?

It depends on volume and access, and we quote one flat number on site before starting, with no hourly meter. See how our pricing works.
