The honest place to start is with the free service, because on a large part of Brentwood it is the right answer and we will tell you so. LA Sanitation's bulky item collection is described by the city as an unlimited curbside service at no additional charge, with no per-item cap and no annual cap for a single-family address. You schedule it on the online service request form, through MyLA311, or on the 24-hour Customer Care Center at 1-800-773-2489, at least one business day before your normal collection, with an itemized list so a correctly sized truck is sent, and the items are taken on your regular trash day.
What it accepts covers most furniture outright: couches, tables and chairs, mattresses and box springs, toilets and sinks, carpet if rolled and tied, large wood pieces and doors, and electronic waste including televisions, computers and monitors. There is also a free monthly drop-off option: five sites across the city open one Saturday a month, 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., with the West LA site at 2027 Stoner Avenue the nearest to Brentwood, and the 2026 dates published in advance as January 10, February 14, March 14, April 11, May 9, June 13, July 11, August 8, September 19, October 10, November 21 and December 12.
The refusals matter once a furniture job becomes a house job: no automotive parts or used oil, no construction materials, no commercial appliances, no paints, solvents or chemicals, no medicines or needles, no fluorescent lights, and no cardboard outside a scheduled Move In / Move Out service. A furniture clearance that started in a living room reaches at least one of those within twenty minutes of opening a garage.
And then the structural limit, which in Brentwood is the whole story. The free service is curbside. It does not include a crew coming through a gate, up a drive, into a house and down a flight of interior steps. On the flatter blocks that gap is a few feet of parkway. On a canyon property it is a hundred yards of private road, a gate, a level change and a staircase, and no amount of scheduling closes it.
No curblong stretches of the canyon streets have no sidewalk and no usable curb
