Route one is the curb, and where a Brentwood address has a usable one it is genuinely good. LA Sanitation calls its bulky item collection an unlimited curbside service at no additional charge, with no per-item or annual cap for a single-family address. Book it on the online service request form, through MyLA311 or on the 24-hour Customer Care Center at 1-800-773-2489, at least one business day ahead with an itemized list, and it is collected on your regular trash day. It takes the furniture end of a garage: an old couch, a desk, a chest of drawers, rolled and tied carpet, large wood, doors, and e-waste including televisions, computers and monitors.
Now read the refusals against a real garage wall. Paints, solvents and chemicals: refused. Automotive parts and used oil: refused. Fluorescent lights: refused. Construction materials, concrete, brick and dirt: refused. Commercial appliances: refused. Cardboard outside a scheduled Move In / Move Out service: refused. That is most of what makes a garage a garage, and on a long-held Brentwood property it is decades deep.
Route two is the S.A.F.E. network, and this is where Brentwood is genuinely distinctive. S.A.F.E. stands for Solvents, Automotive, Flammables, Electronics, and the centers take aerosols, automotive fluids, cleaners and solvents, e-waste, household batteries, paint and thinner, pool chemicals, fluorescent bulbs and mercury items, pesticides, propane cylinders, sharps and medications, free to City of Los Angeles and Los Angeles County residents. They refuse explosives, radioactive materials and medical waste. Every center in the network opens Saturday and Sunday 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. — except UCLA, at 550 Charles E. Young Drive West, which opens Fridays, Saturdays and the first Sunday of each month, 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. It is also the closest one to Brentwood, so the Friday opening is a genuine local advantage that almost nobody uses.
The binding constraint is quantity. California limits household hazardous waste transport to 125 pounds or 15 gallons per visit. That is a state transport rule, not a facility preference, and it applies to you, to us and to everybody. Twenty part-used paint tins, a case of aerosols, a drum of pool chemical and four car batteries exceed it comfortably, so a properly stocked garage is several runs. Paint separately has PaintCare, a free statewide take-back funded by a recovery fee already paid at purchase, from nothing on a half pint or less up to $1.60 on containers over one gallon to five gallons. And tires are their own regulated item: excluded from curbside bulky collection entirely, carrying a California tire fee of $1.75 on each new tire, with anyone transporting ten or more waste tires required to be a CalRecycle-registered hauler with a trip log.
