Garage cleanouts in Sherman Oaks
Two kinds of garage. Two completely different city programs.

Detached postwar garages behind the houses, and assigned stalls, storage cages and lockers under the buildings along Ventura Boulevard — cleared, sorted on site and swept, with a free upfront quote and no obligation.

In short

Sherman Oaks has two kinds of garage: the detached one behind a postwar house, and a numbered stall with a storage cage under a Ventura Boulevard building. LA Sanitation serves homes of one to four units; buildings of five or more are recycLA accounts paying a separate bulky item fee.

Which free service you have for a Sherman Oaks garage depends on the building the garage belongs to, not on what is inside it. LA Sanitation organizes its services around a single dividing line: single-family residents are homes of one to four units serviced by LASAN, and they get the free bulky item pickup, a separate free metal appliance pickup and the rest of the single-family menu. Multi-family residents are buildings serviced by a recycLA Service Provider — recycLA covers commercial, industrial and multi-family properties of five or more units across 11 citywide zones — and their bulky collection is funded instead by the Multi-family Bulky Item Fee, which appears on the LADWP bill rather than being requested free through 311. One route is open to both: S.A.F.E. Centers take household hazardous waste and e-waste free from Los Angeles residents, up to 15 gallons or 125 pounds per visit. Los Angeles Junk Removal & Hauling clears either kind of garage, sorts every fraction at your address and quotes it free upfront.

Say garage in Sherman Oaks and you could mean two entirely unrelated spaces. One is a single-story detached box at the end of a long driveway behind a postwar house, with a side door, a pitched roof, a workbench and thirty years of everything stacked to the rafters. The other is a numbered rectangle of painted concrete on P1 under an apartment or condo building near the boulevard, with a storage cage or a locker bolted to the wall behind it and a ramp with a clearance bar at the top.

They fill up the same way and they empty in completely different ways, and the free city program behind them is not even the same program. That is what this page is about. The general picture of what we haul in this neighborhood is on junk removal in Sherman Oaks, and the way we run garages county-wide is on garage cleanouts.

Which program is actually yours

The line LA Sanitation draws
is the front door, not the garage door.

LASAN's own navigation splits residents in two before it describes a single service. For Single-Family Residents is labeled for homes of one to four units serviced by LASAN. For Multi-Family Residents is labeled for homes with multiple units serviced by recycLA. Everything else follows from which of those two you are, and a duplex on a flats street and a 30-unit building four blocks away are on opposite sides of it.

If you are on the single-family side, the menu is genuinely good and most people use a fraction of it. Bulky item pickup is unlimited, curbside and at no additional charge, requested at least one business day ahead and collected on your regular trash day. Appliances are a separate request rather than part of it: LASAN runs a free Metal Appliance Pickup for residents with curbside collection, covering refrigerators and freezers, washers and dryers, dishwashers, air conditioners, and water heaters and standard heaters, with the same one business day of notice, often on a different truck. It asks you to take the doors off a refrigerator or freezer before it goes to the curb so a child cannot get shut inside, and it warns that drivers can only collect the specific items listed on their daily work order — which is exactly how an unlisted chest freezer gets left standing on the driveway. Annual brush pickup, extra capacity tags and a Move In / Move Out extra pickup sit on the same single-family list.

If you are on the multi-family side, none of those requests are yours to make. Your building is served by one of six exclusive recycLA Service Providers — Athens Services, NASA Services, Republic Services, Universal Waste Systems, Ware Disposal and Waste Management — assigned by zone across a program that covers more than 66,000 commercial, industrial and multi-family properties. Bulky collection still exists: LASAN describes an on-call service for couches and other furniture, mattresses, doors, carpet, toilets, electrical waste and appliances, paid for by the Multi-family Bulky Item Fee. That fee is charged to ratepayers who get their hauling from a recycLA provider and do not pay trash fees directly to LASAN, it arrives on the LADWP bill, and the adjustment now in force was approved by City Council in October 2025 and implemented in November 2025. Low-income customers may qualify for a 31.25 percent discount and Lifeline customers for a full exemption. Practically, it also means the request usually goes through your building manager, not through you.

The one program that does not ask what kind of building you live in is the one a garage needs most. LASAN lists S.A.F.E. Centers — Solvents, Automotive, Flammables, Electronics — under both the single-family and multi-family headings. They take aerosol cans, automotive fluids and products, household cleaners and chemicals, fluorescent bulbs and mercury-containing items, paints, stains and solvents, pesticides and herbicides, pool chemicals and propane cylinders, free, from Los Angeles residents, up to 15 gallons or 125 pounds per visit, and the address the waste came from is asked for at drop-off. They do not take explosives, radioactive materials or medical waste. The Valley centers are Randall Street in Sun Valley and Nicole Bernson in Northridge. You stay in the vehicle with the engine off and trained staff unload it.

Getting into the garage

A long driveway,
or a ramp with a bar across it.

The detached garage on a flats lot is the easier of the two and still not simple. It sits at the end of a driveway that runs the full depth of the property, which means every item crosses that distance on foot or on a dolly, and the driveway is usually the only place a vehicle can stand. If a car has to stay in it, the carry doubles. These buildings are old enough that the slab has moved, the roll-up door sticks, the side door is blocked from the inside by whatever was put there last, and the rafters have been used as a second floor. We clear a working aisle first and sort outward from it rather than pulling everything onto the driveway and creating a pile nobody can walk around.

The subterranean garage under a building near the boulevard is a different discipline entirely. There is a clearance bar at the top of the ramp, and a box truck is not getting past it, so we work with what fits or we shuttle up to a legal position at street level. There is no staging area: your stall is your stall, the drive aisle has to stay open for residents, and a pile spread across two spaces will have somebody standing over it within ten minutes. Storage cages are narrow, tall, and packed by people who could reach the top; half the job is getting boxes down without dropping them onto a neighbor's paintwork. Buildings frequently want a certificate of insurance on file before a crew works inside, and many restrict service elevator hours. Tell us the building and we will sort that with the manager in advance instead of arriving to a locked gate.

Both kinds of garage produce the same awkward material, and it is the reason a garage is not a furniture job. Half-used paint, thinners and solvents, motor oil and automotive fluids, aerosols, pool chemicals from a hillside property, pesticides and weed killers, propane cylinders from a patio heater, fluorescent tubes, car batteries and a drawer of loose household ones. LA Sanitation refuses all of it at the curb, whichever program you are on, and the S.A.F.E. route caps a visit at 15 gallons or 125 pounds. A thoroughly stocked garage can exceed that, which is a genuine planning fact rather than a sales line, and we count that fraction while quoting rather than discovering it at the end.

The third category is whatever was built into the garage and is now coming out of it: shelving fixed to the wall with the block behind it, a torn-out workbench, old cabinetry, broken slab from a driveway repair, a few bags of hardened cement. That is construction material, and LASAN names construction materials, concrete, bricks and dirt among the things it will not take at the curb. It leaves, but it leaves on a different route from the boxes. When the garage is really the first room of a whole-property clearance, see estate cleanouts; when the bed and the sofa are going too, see furniture removal in Sherman Oaks.

Where a garage goes

Five destinations
out of one room.

A garage load is sorted into five streams and the sorting happens where the garage is. Reusable goods first: tools, camping and sports equipment, bicycles, garden equipment, kitchenware, furniture that survived storage, sealed and unopened supplies. Sherman Oaks garages produce a lot of this, particularly in houses that have had one owner for decades, and it goes to reuse rather than to a gate.

Metal second. Shelving standards, hand and power tools, bicycle frames, ladders, pipe, gate hardware, a dead water heater, a washer that stopped working three moves ago. That goes to a scrap recycler. If the appliance is still standing in a driveway on a single-family address, it may not need us at all — LASAN's free metal appliance pickup covers refrigerators and freezers, washers and dryers, dishwashers, air conditioners, water heaters and standard heaters, on one business day's notice, provided the item is on the work order and the refrigerator doors are off. We will tell you when that is the better call.

Electronics third. The monitor on the shelf, the printer in the box, the cable drawer, the cordless tool batteries that have swollen. LASAN accepts televisions, computers and monitors on the bulky request for single-family addresses, and S.A.F.E. Centers take e-waste and batteries free from Los Angeles residents generally. LASAN asks for battery terminals to be taped or bagged, batteries stored in a non-metal container, damaged or swollen cells kept apart from the rest, and none of them put in household trash or recycling. That is precisely the drawer at the back of a Sherman Oaks garage, and it is handled that way.

Household hazardous waste fourth, and it decides how the job is planned rather than how it is priced. Paints, stains and solvents, automotive fluids and products, cleaners and chemicals, pesticides and herbicides, pool chemicals, propane cylinders, aerosols, fluorescent bulbs and mercury items all go to a S.A.F.E. Center, free, within the published 15 gallon or 125 pound per-visit limit, with the origin address recorded. Explosives, radioactive material and medical waste are refused there and need a specialist route, which we will tell you plainly rather than quietly loading. Fifth and last is the genuinely disposed fraction, and on a properly sorted garage it is the smallest of the five.

Sherman Oaks garage
questions

Which city program is yours, how a below-grade garage is worked, and what cannot ride in the load.

I live in a condo off Ventura. Can I just book the free 311 bulky pickup?

Probably not, and it is worth checking before you stack anything anywhere. LA Sanitation publishes that free curbside bulky pickup under its single-family heading, for homes of one to four units serviced by LASAN. Buildings serviced by a recycLA Service Provider are on the multi-family side, where bulky collection is an on-call City service funded by the Multi-family Bulky Item Fee that appears on the LADWP bill. In most buildings that request is made by the manager rather than by a resident, which is why people call us instead.

What is recycLA and why does it apply to my building?

It is the City's exclusive franchise system for waste collection at commercial, industrial and multi-family properties of five or more units. LA Sanitation divides the city into 11 zones and assigns each one to a provider, with six of them across the program: Athens Services, NASA Services, Republic Services, Universal Waste Systems, Ware Disposal and Waste Management. More than 66,000 properties are covered. You do not choose your provider, and your building's bulky service comes through that arrangement rather than through the single-family 311 route.

Can you get a truck into the parking garage under my building?

Sometimes, and we ask first rather than finding out at the ramp. Below-grade garages have a clearance bar at the entrance, a tight ramp and a drive aisle that has to stay open for residents. If our vehicle does not fit we work from a legal position at street level and shuttle, which is slower but does not involve wedging anything under a concrete beam. Tell us the building when you call and whether they need a certificate of insurance or a booked elevator window, and we will arrange it with the manager in advance.

The garage is full of old paint, motor oil and pool chemicals. Do you take those?

Yes, separated from everything else, because they cannot ride in a normal load. S.A.F.E. Centers accept aerosols, automotive fluids, cleaners and chemicals, fluorescent bulbs and mercury items, paints, stains and solvents, pesticides, pool chemicals and propane cylinders free from Los Angeles residents, up to 15 gallons or 125 pounds per visit, and they ask for the address the waste came from. Explosives, radioactive materials and medical waste are refused outright and need a specialist route. A heavily stocked garage can exceed a single visit's limit, and we count that while quoting.

There is a broken washer and an old freezer in there. Is that part of the same job?

It can be, or you may not need us for it. On a single-family address LA Sanitation runs a separate free Metal Appliance Pickup covering refrigerators and freezers, washers and dryers, dishwashers, air conditioners, water heaters and standard heaters, with one business day's notice and often a different truck. Two conditions catch people out: refrigerator and freezer doors have to come off before it goes out, and drivers may only collect the specific items on their work order, so anything you forgot to mention stays where it is.

How long does a Sherman Oaks garage take?

Access decides it far more than volume does. A detached garage a truck can back up to on a flats driveway is quick. A stall and a storage cage below grade, worked through a shared elevator inside a booked window, is the same amount of material and considerably more time. A garage with a heavily stocked chemical shelf may also need that fraction split across more than one drop-off. You get the real answer while we are quoting, free and with no obligation.
