Garage cleanouts in Culver City
Four words rule out half of it.

Culver City accepts appliances and lawn mowers on its free pickup only with all fluids removed. That one condition quietly disqualifies most of what is actually on a garage shelf, and it is the thing worth understanding before you book anything.

Free quote, no obligation · one flat number before we start · you can also text that number

A Los Angeles County garage packed shoulder-high with cartons, bulging black bags, storage crates and tools, only a narrow path left to the open roller door
A stored-and-forgotten load pulled out of a Los Angeles County property. Half of a real garage never belonged on a bulky pickup at all.
In short

Culver City takes appliances and gasoline mowers at the curb only once every fluid is drained, and refuses hazardous material entirely, which rules out the paint, motor oil, pool chemicals and batteries on a normal garage shelf. Those route to a weekend S.A.F.E. center within 125 pounds or 15 gallons, sorted on your driveway first.

Culver City's bulky item program accepts appliances and gasoline lawn mowers only with all fluids removed, and refuses household garbage, hazardous material and heavy items outright. In a real garage that rules out most of the shelf: paint and thinners, motor oil and antifreeze, pool chemicals, pesticides, propane cylinders, car batteries and anything electronic. None of that is junk in the legal sense, and none of it can go out at the curb. It routes instead to a S.A.F.E. Collection Center, free to Los Angeles County residents including Culver City, open weekends 9 a.m. to 3 p.m., within a hard state limit of 125 pounds or 15 gallons per visit, or to a PaintCare drop-off for architectural paint. Los Angeles Junk Removal & Hauling clears the garage, sorts the load on the driveway and routes the regulated fraction properly, on a free quote agreed before anything is lifted.

A garage is the one room in a house that is also a chemical store, a workshop, a scrap yard and an archive. That is what makes clearing it different from clearing a lounge. The volume is rarely the problem. The problem is that a single set of shelves can contain four different regulated waste streams, each with its own lawful destination, and that the free municipal route quietly excludes almost all of them in four words.

So this page works from the shelf outwards rather than from the truck inwards. What the city will and will not take, what the fluids condition actually means once you apply it to a real garage, where each excluded category legally goes, and how a Culver City garage — often detached, often off an alley, often at the bottom or the top of a hill — changes the work. The rest of what we clear here is on junk removal in Culver City, and the wider service is on garage cleanouts across Los Angeles.

Four words, read properly

“With all fluids removed”
is the whole rule.

Culver City's accepted list for bulky pickup includes furniture and mattresses, and then appliances and gasoline lawn mowers — with all fluids removed. That qualifier is doing an enormous amount of work. A mower is accepted once the gasoline and the oil are out of it. A fridge is accepted once it has been drained. The fluids themselves are never accepted, and neither is anything else on the shelf that behaves like them.

The refusals confirm it. The program will not take household garbage, dirt, rocks, bricks, glass panes, concrete, hot ashes, or heavy materials such as auto bodies and engines. It is also curbside only: items out at the front property line, on the same side of the street, by 6 a.m. on the collection day and no earlier than the day before, bundled if they are pipes, lumber or trimmings and kept within four inches in diameter and five feet in length. And it is capped, at two free pickups a year of up to six items for a single-family address and one for a multi-family address.

Now walk a typical Culver City garage against that list. A mower and a fridge: accepted, once drained, and that is two of your six items. Shelving and a workbench: furniture, fine. Six part-used tins of paint, a gallon of thinners, two quarts of motor oil, a jug of antifreeze, a bag of pool chemicals, a half-empty bottle of weedkiller, a propane cylinder off a barbecue, a car battery, four old tires, a dead monitor and a box of chargers: none of it accepted, none of it lawful to put out, and it is very often the majority of what makes the garage unusable.

That is the honest shape of the job. A garage cleanout is not one clearance, it is a clearance plus a sorting exercise plus two or three separate lawful deliveries. Anybody quoting it as a flat lift-and-shift either has not looked at the shelves or is planning to put things where they do not belong.

The Culver City garage

Detached, off an alley,
and up a hill.

Culver City's residential stock is mostly post-war, and its garages reflect that. On the flat streets of Sunkist Park, Studio Village, Lindberg Park and the McManus blocks, the garage is very often detached and set at the back of the lot, reached down a side drive or off a rear alley rather than through the house. That is good news for a clearance, because there is a straight line from the shelf to the truck, and it is the main reason a Culver City garage job is usually faster than the equivalent job in a hillside neighborhood.

Culver Crest and Blair Hills are the opposite. Those are hill lots: steep short driveways, tandem parking, retaining walls, and a garage that sits either well above or well below the street. A truck parks where it can and everything is carried on a gradient, which is slower and needs more people. Fox Hills and the newer condo stock bring the third pattern, where the storage is a numbered space in a subterranean structure with a height-restricted entrance, and the deciding question is whether our vehicle physically fits or whether the load has to be walked to street level.

Then there is what is actually stored, which in this city skews a particular way. Culver City has a long working relationship with the studios, and garages here turn up production kit, flight cases, set dressing, paint from a build, half a lighting rig and boxes of paperwork with more history than the house. That is worth a slower first pass, not a faster one. It is also why we walk the space before quoting rather than pricing off a photograph: a garage that looks like two truckloads can be one, and a garage that looks like one can hide a shelf that needs its own delivery to a S.A.F.E. center.

The last thing that decides the day is the hazardous fraction, because it has opening hours. The permanent S.A.F.E. centers run at weekends only, 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. The nearest to Culver City is the Hyperion center at 7660 W. Imperial Highway, Gate B, in Playa del Rey. The UCLA center on Charles E. Young Drive West opens Fridays, Saturdays and the first Sunday of the month. The LA-Glendale center on Colorado Boulevard is Saturday only and requires a state photo ID at the security gate, because it sits inside a water reclamation plant. So a Wednesday garage clearance with paint on the shelf is a Wednesday clearance and a weekend delivery, and we tell you that when we quote rather than after. Pricing is by the volume the load takes in the truck, quoted free and agreed before anything is lifted, with labor, transport and disposal inside the number, and the second movement is not billed twice: how our pricing works.

If the garage is part of a whole-property clearance, it is closer to furniture removal in Culver City at volume, and if the deadline is today, see same-day junk removal in Culver City.

Where the shelf goes

The regulated half,
item by item.

Paint is the biggest volume and the easiest to get right. Architectural paint, stains and coatings in containers of five gallons or less are covered by PaintCare, which runs more than 800 free drop-off locations across California, mostly at paint retailers and household hazardous waste facilities, reachable on (855) 724-6809. Drop-off is free because the cost was collected as a recovery fee at purchase: nothing on a half-pint or less, $0.35 over a half-pint and under a gallon, $0.75 on a one-gallon container, and $1.60 on containers over one gallon up to five. Above 100 gallons, PaintCare will collect. The S.A.F.E. centers also take paint, stains and solvents free, within the 125-pound or 15-gallon per visit limit.

Automotive fluids, solvents and garden chemicals go the S.A.F.E. route. Those centers — the initials stand for Solvents, Automotive, Flammables, Electronics — accept aerosols, automotive fluids, cleaners and solvents, e-waste, household batteries, paint and thinner, pool chemicals, fluorescent bulbs and mercury items, pesticides, propane cylinders, sharps and medications, free to Los Angeles County residents. They do not accept explosives, radioactive material or medical waste, and they do not accept business waste at all. The 125-pound or 15-gallon cap is a state transport limit rather than a local policy, so a garage holding more than that is simply more than one visit.

Electronics are not discretionary. In California they are universal waste: the state's exemption ended on 9 February 2006, and since then computers, monitors, televisions, printers, microwaves, household batteries, fluorescent lamps and mercury switches and thermostats have been banned from ordinary trash, with cathode-ray tubes in older monitors and televisions named specifically. A garage clearance almost always turns some up, and they leave on a separate stream.

Tires are the one most people get wrong, and they are worth knowing about because the rule binds the hauler rather than you. California charges a tire fee of $1.75 on each new tire, split between the Air Resources Board and CalRecycle. More importantly, state law requires anyone transporting ten or more used or waste tires in California to hold a valid CalRecycle waste tire hauler registration, display the decal, and initiate and carry a comprehensive trip log for the load, retained for three years. Nine or fewer is unregulated. So if your garage has a stack of old tires in the corner, that is a specific question to ask whoever is taking them away.

Everything that is left after all of that is the ordinary part of the job: scrap metal to a recycler, clean lumber kept out of the mixed fraction, cardboard and packaging separated, usable tools and goods set aside for donation, and only the genuine residual disposed of. Which is, in the end, the entire argument for sorting a garage on the driveway rather than at the transfer station.

Culver City garage
questions

Mostly about the fluids rule, the weekend-only centers, and what is not legally junk.

What does “with all fluids removed” actually mean?

It is the condition Culver City attaches to appliances and gasoline lawn mowers on its free bulky pickup. The machine is accepted once the gasoline, oil and other fluids are out of it. The fluids themselves are never accepted, and nor is anything else on the shelf that behaves like them. In practice those four words are the reason a garage cannot simply be stacked at the curb, because the excluded fraction — paint, oil, antifreeze, pool chemicals, pesticides, propane, batteries — is usually the part making the garage unusable in the first place.

Where do I take paint from a Culver City garage?

Two free routes. PaintCare runs more than 800 drop-off locations across California, mostly paint retailers and household hazardous waste facilities, on (855) 724-6809, covering architectural coatings in containers of five gallons or less; drop-off is free because a recovery fee was already collected at purchase. The S.A.F.E. Collection Centers also take paint, stains and solvents free from Los Angeles County residents, within the 125-pound or 15-gallon per-visit limit. If you have more than 100 gallons, PaintCare will arrange a collection.

Can you clear my garage midweek if there is paint and oil in it?

Yes, and the furniture, shelving, lumber and scrap all go the same day. The regulated fraction is the part that has to wait, because the permanent S.A.F.E. centers open at weekends only, 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. So a Wednesday clearance is a Wednesday clearance and a weekend delivery. We say that on the quote rather than discovering it at a locked gate, and you are not charged twice for the second movement.

Which S.A.F.E. center is nearest to Culver City?

Hyperion, at 7660 W. Imperial Highway, Gate B, in Playa del Rey, straight down toward the coast. It opens Saturdays and Sundays, 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. The UCLA center on Charles E. Young Drive West opens Fridays, Saturdays and the first Sunday of each month. The LA-Glendale center on Colorado Boulevard is Saturday only and needs a state photo ID at the security gate because it sits inside a water reclamation plant. All of them are free to Los Angeles County residents, and Culver City residents qualify.

I have old tires in the garage. Is that a problem?

Not for you, but it is a real rule for whoever hauls them. California requires anyone transporting ten or more used or waste tires in the state to hold a valid CalRecycle waste tire hauler registration, display the decal on the windshield, and initiate and carry a comprehensive trip log for the load, kept for three years. Nine or fewer is unregulated. There is also a California tire fee of $1.75 charged on each new tire. It is a fair question to ask any hauler before a stack of tires goes on their truck.

What does a garage cleanout in Culver City cost?

It is quoted free and up front, with no obligation, and the number is agreed before anything is lifted. Pricing is by the volume the load occupies in the truck rather than by the hour, with labor, transport and disposal inside the number. On a garage the things that move it are volume, the carry — a flat detached garage off an alley in Studio Village is a very different job from a Culver Crest hill lot — and how much of the load is regulated. It is set out on how our pricing works.
