Mattress removal in Encino
The city service is free. It is also strictly curbside.

Mattresses, box springs and foundations taken out of Encino houses, estate properties above Ventura Boulevard and apartment buildings on the flats, then routed into California's statewide recycling system.

In short

Encino has no refuse department of its own. LA Sanitation collects mattresses and box springs at no charge, unlimited, on one business day of notice, and strictly from the curb. City Planning records estate size lots south of Ventura Boulevard, so that carry is what mattress removal in Encino really is.

Unlike Burbank next door, Encino is not an incorporated city at all. It is a City of Los Angeles neighborhood inside the Encino-Tarzana community plan area, which means LA Sanitation handles its refuse and the bulky item program is the city-wide one: an unlimited curbside pickup at no additional charge, collected on your regular trash day, requested at least one business day ahead through the online service request form, the MyLA311 app or the 24-hour Customer Care Center on 1-800-773-2489. Mattresses and box springs are named on the accepted list. The catch is the word curbside. City Planning records that Encino's residential development south of Ventura Boulevard is large estate size single family lots, on hillside streets that curve with the topography instead of following a grid, and moving a rigid king foundation from an upstairs room to that curb is the part nobody schedules. That carry is what we do.

There is a tidy assumption behind most advice about getting rid of a bed in Los Angeles: that the difficult bit is finding somewhere for it to go. In Encino it is not. The destination is free, the state already paid for the recycling, and the city will send a truck. The difficulty is entirely the distance between the bedroom and the street, and on this side of the Valley that distance is unusual.

This page covers the LA Sanitation program in full, the boundaries of the statewide mattress system, and the specific geography that makes an Encino bed heavy work. The rest of what we clear locally is on junk removal in Encino, and the county-wide version of this service is on mattress removal.

The LASAN program, in full

Free, unlimited, and it stops
at the edge of the road.

LA Sanitation publishes the bulky item service under its single-family residents heading, for homes of one to four units that it collects from, and describes it as an unlimited curbside service at no additional charge. Items are taken on your regular trash day, and the department asks for at least one business day of notice before your normal collection so the right vehicle is routed. There are three booking channels, all equivalent: the online service request form, the MyLA311 app on Android or iPhone, or the 24-hour Customer Care Center on 1-800-773-2489. The department also asks for an itemized list, giving its own worked example of one mattress, two chairs and a desk, so the truck that arrives is sized for what is waiting.

What it will take is specific, and beds are on the list. LA Sanitation names furniture such as couches, tables and chairs; mattresses and box springs; toilets and sinks; carpet, provided it is rolled and tied; large wood pieces or doors; and electronic waste including televisions, computers and monitors. What it will not take at the curb is equally specific: automotive parts or used oil, construction materials such as concrete, bricks and dirt, commercial appliances, paints, solvents or chemicals, medicines or needles, fluorescent lights, and cardboard unless you have a scheduled move in or move out service. Chemicals and paint are pushed instead to the S.A.F.E. centers. That matters in a bedroom clearance more than it sounds, because the bed is usually not travelling alone.

There is a second free route that suits Encino households with a pickup truck and a Saturday. Once a month LA Sanitation opens five bulky item drop-off sites across the city from 8:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., published as Saturdays through 2026 on January 10, February 14, March 14, April 11, May 9, June 13, July 11, August 8, September 19, October 10, November 21 and December 12. The nearest two to Encino are the West Valley site at 8840 Vanalden Avenue in Northridge and the East Valley site at 11050 Pendleton Street in Sun Valley. That is a real option for one unit and a genuinely bad one for six, which is roughly the line at which people stop driving and start calling.

Alongside all of that sits the statewide system, which has already been paid for. California's mattress stewardship program is overseen by CalRecycle and operated by the Mattress Recycling Council, funded by a recycling fee collected by retailers on every mattress, futon and foundation sold for use in the state. That fee went from $16.00 to $18.00 per unit for units sold on or after April 1, 2026, is charged per unit regardless of size or type, is not subject to sales tax, and has to appear as a separate line item on the receipt. Because the money is collected at the point of sale, qualifying used mattresses and foundations are accepted at participating drop-off points at no additional cost, and CalRecycle reports 247 such sites across California with 98.7 percent of residents living within fifteen miles of access to the program. None of that touches the part of the job that is actually hard here, which is everything between the bedroom door and the curb.

Why the carry is the job here

Estate lots, curving hill streets
and a base that will not bend.

Encino has two completely different geographies and they need two different answers. City Planning's community plan for Encino-Tarzana describes residential development in Encino as large estate size single family lots located south of Ventura Boulevard, with a mix of single family and multiple density dwellings north of the boulevard between it and the 101 Freeway. SurveyLA's historic resources survey of the same plan area puts the topography plainly: the flats north of Ventura Boulevard have an orthogonal grid of arterial streets and boulevards with irregular secondary streets often terminating in cul-de-sacs, while the areas south of the boulevard are irregular in street pattern and topography, lushly populated with native Valley and Live Oak trees as they ascend into the Santa Monica Mountains, on streets that do not follow a grid at all and curve instead to conform to the hills.

Translate that into a bed. On a large lot south of Ventura Boulevard, the curb where LA Sanitation collects may be a very long way from the bedroom door, with a gate, a slope and a turn in between. On a curving hillside street there is often no straight run in front of the property at all, limited legal parking, and no realistic place to leave a full-size truck standing while a crew works. We ask how far a vehicle can actually get before we ask how many units there are, because on this side of the boulevard that is the number that sets the crew size. Where the street will not take a large truck we bring a smaller one and shuttle rather than block a lane and annoy a neighborhood that already has enough parked cars.

North of the boulevard the problem changes shape. The same community plan records an eastern stretch of Encino running from the 405 Freeway to Balboa Boulevard that reads as a regional center, with high-rise buildings along Ventura Boulevard, and a residential mix north of the boulevard that includes multiple density housing. In a managed apartment building a mattress becomes a building job rather than a lifting job: a service entrance, an elevator that may need padding and booking, a certificate of insurance on file with the manager, and a window that does not collide with somebody else's move. We arrange all of that before the visit instead of discovering it in a lobby. The plan also singles out Melody Acres, bounded by Tampa Avenue on the east, Corbin Avenue on the west, Topham Street on the north and Martha Street on the south, for its large estate lots and quaint narrow streets, a semi-rural pocket where a wide vehicle is simply the wrong tool.

Then the object. A mattress is flexible and forgiving. A box spring or foundation is a rigid timber rectangle that will not fold, will not flex and will not turn on a half-landing, and a queen or king base is a shade over six and a half feet long. Older Encino houses with tight stair turns, and newer ones with vertical layouts and a primary suite upstairs, both produce the same stuck moment on a landing. Where a base genuinely will not come out whole, we take it out on straps through an opening or break it down in the room so the timber frame separates from the cover. Neither is a failure and both are decided in front of you at the quote. Bedroom clearances rarely stop at the bed either, so if the wardrobes and dressers are going too, that is furniture removal in Encino, and a whole property is estate cleanouts in Encino.

Where the material ends up

Steel, foam, fabric, wood
— separated, not buried.

A mattress that reaches a participating site is not landfilled, it is dismantled. The steel, foam, fabric and wood are separated and used to make new products, and California publishes the scale of that. CalRecycle's 2025 program highlights record 1.6 million mattresses collected in 2025, 14.3 million since the program started in 2016, 62 million pounds of mattress materials diverted, and 67.3 percent of collected units renovated, recycled or sent to biomass conversion. The program is run by the Mattress Recycling Council, which is required to file a plan, annual reports and annual budgets with CalRecycle, and the same page records that CalRecycle found the Council's 2025 annual report incomplete in July 2026 and required a resubmission. It is a regulated program with a regulator that pushes back, which is worth knowing when someone tells you a mattress is unrecyclable.

The coverage boundary is where clearances go wrong, so here it is exactly. California accepts mattresses and foundations discarded by California consumers, individuals and businesses alike, and states that neither the condition of the unit nor the date of purchase matters. A mattress can be all foam or a mix of foam, springs and other materials; a foundation is the platform or base that supports it, stationary or adjustable; and California is the only program state that treats a futon mattress separating from its frame as a mattress. Outside the program are sofa beds, futon frames and bases, bed frames, car beds, collapsible roll-away beds, mattress pads and toppers, pillows, loose bedding such as blankets, comforters, quilts and sheets, chair and couch cushions, sleeping bags, crib and bassinet mattresses and other juvenile products, air mattresses and water beds containing no upholstery material, and partial units stripped of their padding. A bedroom therefore splits into two streams on the way out, and we sort it at your address rather than at a gate.

If you are replacing rather than simply disposing, the cheapest removal available is the one you already own. California law requires a retailer to offer to take back your old mattress at no additional cost when it delivers a new one, and that applies to online purchases too, although the retailer has up to thirty days to arrange the collection and the parcel carrier will not do it on the delivery visit. The one refusal permitted is for a unit that is contaminated and poses a risk to personnel, new products or equipment; that decision is the retailer's alone and the recycling fee is not refunded when it happens. If your retailer turns a bed down, the program's own advice is to contact your public works department or waste hauler for safe disposal of a contaminated unit, and that is the call we usually end up on.

Infestation is handled by sequence rather than by refusal. California Department of Public Health guidance is that a pest control operator should service furniture and mattresses before disposal, that treated items marked for disposal should be wrapped in plastic before removal from the infested room so bed bugs and eggs cannot fall off while they are moved, and that infested items should be clearly labeled BED BUG INFESTED before disposal or before being placed at the curb. Where a treated mattress or box spring is staying in the house, the guidance is a zippered commercially available plastic cover at least 0.8 millimeters thick. We bag and seal as standard on every bed, in every building, because the alternative is spreading a problem down a stairwell that other people use.

Encino mattress
questions

The free city route, the curbside limit, the hill streets and the base that will not turn.

Will the city take my mattress in Encino for free?

Yes, at the curb. Encino is City of Los Angeles, and LA Sanitation runs bulky item collection as an unlimited curbside service at no additional charge on your regular trash day, with at least one business day of notice. Mattresses and box springs are on the accepted list. Book it through the online service request form, the MyLA311 app or 1-800-773-2489, and have an itemized list ready. If the bed can reach the curb under its own steam, use the city. We are for the part where it cannot.

What does "curbside" actually rule out?

Anything that has not made it to the edge of the road. The service is collection from the curb, which on a large estate size lot south of Ventura Boulevard can be a long walk from a bedroom, through a gate, down a slope and past a turn. It also means nothing is collected from inside a house, a garage, a side yard, a courtyard or behind a locked gate. That gap between the room and the curb is the entire reason this page exists.

Can you get a king box spring down a turning staircase?

Usually, and when we cannot we say so before we start rather than halfway up. A mattress bends; a foundation does not, and a king base is a rigid rectangle a little over six and a half feet long that will not pivot on a half-landing. The options are a strapped exit through a window or over a rail, or breaking the base down in the room so the timber frame and the cover separate. We decide that in front of you at the quote and we protect the jambs and treads either way.

Is there anywhere I can drive a mattress to myself?

Yes. LA Sanitation opens five bulky item drop-off sites across the city one Saturday a month, from 8:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. The two nearest Encino are the West Valley site at 8840 Vanalden Avenue in Northridge and the East Valley site at 11050 Pendleton Street in Sun Valley. There is also a statewide network of participating drop-off points funded by the recycling fee already paid at purchase, which CalRecycle puts at 247 sites across California. One bed and a pickup truck, that is a good Saturday. Six beds and a stairwell, less so.

My new bed is being delivered. Should the store take the old one?

Ask them at the point of order, because California law requires a retailer to offer to take back your old mattress at no additional cost when it delivers a new one, including on online purchases. Two caveats matter: the retailer has up to thirty days to arrange the collection, so it may not happen on delivery day, and the retailer may refuse a unit that is contaminated and poses a risk to personnel, new products or equipment. Note that the fee you paid at purchase is not refunded when a retailer declines a unit.

What does it cost?

We charge by the volume the load occupies in the truck, labor, transport and disposal included, quoted upfront and confirmed on site before any lifting starts. The quote is free and nothing is owed for it. The Encino variables are all access rather than tonnage: how far the truck can get up a curving hillside street, how long the carry from the room to a legal parking spot is, whether a base has to come apart, and whether a building needs an elevator booked. We price on the route, and we explain it while we quote.
