Working with Hunter and this company was great. Gave us a quick quote over the phone after sending photos and was able to help us the SAME day. Removal was fast and easy. We definitely recommend going with this company.

A Woodland Hills garage cleanout usually has a fire-zone dimension: the Los Angeles Fire Department's annual notice tells owners in the Very High Fire Hazard Severity Zone to clear hazardous refuse from the property, not only vegetation. Free city bulky pickup takes the furniture, but refuses the paint, solvents, automotive fluids and fluorescent tubes.
Two things make a garage clearance different at this end of the Valley. The first is the fire program: the Los Angeles Fire Department's annual owner notification asks property owners in the Very High Fire Hazard Severity Zone to remove hazardous refuse as well as hazardous vegetation, defined under L.A.M.C. Section 57.1.603.5, by the compliance date. On a Woodland Hills lot that language reaches past the brush line to the stacked timber down the side return, the cardboard mountain against the garage wall and the pallets behind the shed. The second is heat. A detached west Valley garage with a metal roll-up door is a far harsher store than a coastal one, and the cushions, mattresses, boxed paper and old electronics people keep in them are usually in worse condition than the owner remembers.
Everything else follows from those two. LA Sanitation will take the bulky half free from the curb, unlimited, with at least one business day of notice, but it prohibits automotive parts and used oil, paints, solvents and chemicals, fluorescent lights, construction materials and commercial appliances — which is most of what makes a garage a garage. Los Angeles Junk Removal & Hauling separates the load at your address, routes each fraction to where it is legally accepted, and quotes the whole thing free and flat before anything is carried out.
Nobody in Woodland Hills fills a garage on purpose. It happens because the lots are big enough to absorb it: a two-car garage, a side return, a workshop or a converted rear room, a pool equipment cabinet, and enough covered space that a thing you are not ready to decide about can be put down and left for eleven years. Then a clearance deadline, a sale, a downsizing move or a new fridge that will not fit past the boxes forces the decision all at once.
This page is about how that sorts out in practice here: what the fire notice asks for beyond the brush, what the summer has already done to the contents, and which free municipal route takes which fraction. The wider local picture is on junk removal in Woodland Hills, and the service across the county is on garage cleanouts.
Woodland Hills is City of Los Angeles, so the headline route is LA Sanitation's bulky item collection, described by the department as an unlimited curbside service at no additional charge. It is collected on your regular trash day, requested at least one business day ahead through the online service request form, the MyLA311 app or the Customer Care Center on 1-800-773-2489, and LASAN asks for an itemized list — one mattress, two chairs, a desk — so the right sized truck is sent. Furniture, mattresses and box springs, toilets and sinks, carpet rolled and tied, large wood pieces and doors, and electronic waste including televisions, computers and monitors are all on the accepted list. LASAN also asks a reasonable question first: if the item is still in good shape, donate it.
There is a second free option for people who do not want to wait for a collection day, and it suits a garage particularly well because you control the timing. Once a month LASAN opens five drop-off sites across the city from 8:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. for bulky items. The West Valley site is 8840 Vanalden Avenue in Northridge, and the last four Saturdays on the published 2026 calendar are September 19, October 10, November 21 and December 12.
Then comes the part neither of those will touch. The prohibited list for curbside pickup names automotive parts and used oil, construction materials including concrete, brick and dirt, commercial appliances, paints, solvents and chemicals, medicines and needles, fluorescent lights, and cardboard unless a Move In / Move Out service has been scheduled. A Woodland Hills garage tends to hold every category on that list at once: the gallon of deck stain from the last repaint, the pool acid and chlorine from the equipment cabinet, the drained oil from a mower, a box of tubes from a shop light, and the leftover slab and pavers from a patio job.
Those have their own free destinations. Household hazardous waste goes to a S.A.F.E. center — Solvents, Automotive, Flammables, Electronics — which LASAN operates free of charge for City and County residents, open every weekend, taking aerosol cans, automotive fluids, cleaners and solvents, e-waste, household batteries, paint and paint thinner, pool chemicals, sharps and medications. The closest to Woodland Hills is the Nicole Bernson center at 10241 North Balboa Boulevard, Northridge, 9:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. Saturday and Sunday. Two site details worth having before you drive up: the line forms on Devonshire Street between Amestoy Avenue and Balboa Boulevard, left turns into the site from Balboa are not permitted, and the center does not accept business waste. Architectural paint has an alternative in PaintCare, whose California drop-off sites charge nothing because the program is funded by a fee applied to each container of new paint at purchase, with a free collection service for anyone holding 100 gallons or more.

Start with the honest conversation about condition, because it saves money. A garage in the west Valley is a hot, dry box for a large part of the year, and heat is unkind to exactly the things people store: foam cushions and mattresses that crumble at the seams, boxed paper and photographs, adhesive-bound furniture that lets go at the joints, tires, and consumer electronics with capacitors and batteries in them. Plenty of what comes out of a long-closed Woodland Hills garage was donatable when it went in and is not now. We will tell you which is which as it comes out, rather than promising that everything will find a second home.
The fire program is the second reason to look at the structure rather than only the shelves. The LAFD's owner notification asks owners in the Very High Fire Hazard Severity Zone to remove hazardous refuse from the parcel alongside hazardous vegetation. In practice the material that attracts attention on an inspection is the accumulation nobody thinks of as junk: stacked lumber and old fencing down the three feet between the garage and the fence, cardboard and paper against a wall, pallets, a pile of prunings that never left, empty pots and bags of bark. If you are not sure whether your parcel is in the zone at all, the LAFD's own notice points owners at their parcel record on the department's fire prevention system and at the CAL FIRE severity zone map, which is the correct way to check rather than assuming from the neighbors.
Access itself divides along the same line the rest of Woodland Hills does. On the flat streets north of Ventura Boulevard the typical job is generous: a long driveway, a truck that can sit close to an open roll-up door, and a side gate wide enough to bring the side-yard material out without going through the house. On the slopes running up toward Mulholland Drive it is the opposite — a garage cut into the hillside at street level with the house below it, a driveway on a grade with a single turning point, and a street too narrow to park across. We size the vehicle to the street and shuttle where we have to, and we ask about the gate and the grade when you call, not when we arrive.
Two things inside the garage change the plan more than volume does. The first is a chemical shelf that is genuinely large: the hazardous fraction has to go to a weekend facility, and a heavily stocked workshop can mean more than one window. The second is anything structural coming out — old cabinets with plaster behind them, a torn-out laundry surround, leftover slab or pavers — because construction and demolition material is refused at the curb and travels under its own rules. If that is most of your job it belongs on construction debris removal, and if the garage is really one part of a whole property being cleared, see estate cleanouts.

Our own crews on Los Angeles County jobs. The garage cleanouts we run in Woodland Hills looks like this too: side yards, narrow walkways and the back of the property is where the work actually is.
Sorting happens at your property, not at a yard afterwards, because by then it is too late to separate anything. Usable goods come out first: tools, garden equipment, bicycles, camping gear, furniture that has survived. LA Sanitation makes the same point on its own bulky pickup page, asking residents to think about donating before scheduling a collection at all, and on a big-lot Woodland Hills garage the donatable fraction is often substantial.
Metal is the second stream and it is worth separating rather than crushing into a mixed load: shelving, tools, bicycle frames, a dead pool pump or heater, copper offcuts, an old barbecue frame, pipe. Scrap metal has a recycler rather than a landfill at the end of it. Clean untreated timber is separated from painted and treated timber, because only one of those has a green destination.
Electronics are the stream governed by law rather than preference. CalRecycle is explicit that California treats nonfunctioning cathode ray tubes and mercury bulbs from televisions, laptops, tablets and monitors as hazardous waste, which is why a monitor that has sat in a hot garage for a decade cannot simply ride out with the furniture. Those are separated and routed to a proper handler, or dropped at a S.A.F.E. center, which takes e-waste free from residents alongside the chemicals.
The chemical stream is the one that shapes the schedule, because its free destination is only open at weekends: paint and thinner, solvents and cleaners, automotive fluids and used oil, pool acid and chlorine, pesticides and weed killers, aerosols, household batteries and old fluorescent tubes. All of it is refused at the curb, and a S.A.F.E. center is the free weekend destination LA Sanitation points residents to for household hazardous waste, with Nicole Bernson in Northridge the closest one here. Corroded or leaking containers get contained rather than stacked, because one split can of thinner ruins everything it touches. Whatever remains after those four streams is the genuinely disposed fraction, and on a properly sorted garage it is much smaller than the pile suggested when the door went up.

Same rule in Woodland Hills as anywhere else in Los Angeles County. The local part is the program above, not the disposal law. Full detail on garage cleanouts.
This page is garage cleanouts in Woodland Hills specifically. The wider service is on garage cleanouts across Los Angeles, and everything we haul in this city is on junk removal in Woodland Hills. Section 57.1.603.5, by the compliance date. In practice that is why stacked lumber, pallets, cardboard and old fencing down a side return get noticed on a hillside parcel. Part of it, and the part is predictable. LA Sanitation's bulky item pickup is free and unlimited for a single-family address, so furniture, mattresses, carpet, large wood, doors and e-waste can all go at the curb with one business day of notice. It will not take paint, solvents, automotive fluids, fluorescent tubes, construction material or commercial appliances. Book the free pickup for the first half and call us for the rest, or hand us all of it in one visit.
Never the bin, never the drain. Pool chemicals are household hazardous waste and go to a S.A.F.E. center, which LA Sanitation runs free for City and County residents every weekend. Nicole Bernson at 10241 North Balboa Boulevard in Northridge is the closest, 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday and Sunday. Take them in sturdy, leak-proof, labeled containers in the trunk, or let us separate and route them as part of the clearance.
Some, and less than people hope. A closed garage on this side of the Valley gets extremely hot for months at a time, and foam, adhesives, paper, photographs and electronics all suffer for it. We pull out what is genuinely reusable and tell you honestly about the rest rather than loading it onto a truck and letting you assume it found a home. LA Sanitation makes the same suggestion on its own pickup page: donate first if the item is still in good shape.
Yes, as their own stream. Fluorescent tubes are prohibited at the curb, and California treats nonfunctioning cathode ray tubes and mercury bulbs from televisions, laptops, tablets and monitors as hazardous waste. Those go to a S.A.F.E. center or a proper handler rather than into a mixed load. Tell us roughly how many screens and tubes there are when you book, because it changes how the load is packed.
A flat-street garage with a driveway a truck can sit in is usually a single visit. What extends it is a genuinely large chemical shelf, because that fraction can only be delivered at a weekend, or a hillside address where the truck cannot get close and everything is carried up a grade. We give you the real answer at the quote, which is free and carries no obligation, rather than the comfortable one.
